8" spread is better chances of a hit than .223 of an inch!

Which do you think would be easier for a 110# woman to wield, 12 gauge shotgun or a Mini 14?

What about the kid sleeping in bed next door? It is people like you that gives guns a bad name and the GC nutz a poster boy to point at.

. Full power 00 is a freakin' handful...but ya don't need to reach out that far for home defense. The Fiocchi 00 low velocity loads are the real deal...and quite managable imo...and there is just no comparison when it comes to instant stopping power....YMMV.I edited this post...rare for me to proofread or correct speeling distakes....but Fiachi ain't right

a 24" barreled Benelli Montefeltro 20ga will weigh maybe 6lbs. doesn't get much lighter than that!

Here is an excellent example of an article knocking shotguns, that is wholly inaccurate. But the article has quite a few good points: People like shotguns because they were very popular for a very long time as the "one gun to have".
http://dailycaller.com/2015/08/21/home-defense-ar-vs-shotgun/ The article also has a VERY bad suggestion with shotguns: using bird shot. My primary reason for NOT using a shotgun is the recoil. Beyond that, the myths are just that: "Can't Miss", the "click-clack" will make a robber run away, they don't penetrate walls, etc. When the SHTF around here in August/September, the AR was with me. We had looters in our neighborhood and in our business park. If you "THINK" you need a gun, bring a rifle and friends with rifles.

Note top self, get some 00 for the 870.
Yes the shotgun is too big for indoor use, but I feel it will be handy to defend my property outdoors. Indoors I have the 9.

What is the negative regarding bird shot?
I understand a 7 1/2 sized pellet won't penetrate at distance but what about inside 20'?

How about a judge? I've never used one but properly loaded 410 would do some damage without penetrating to many walls

Before I gave my uncle a box of Fiocchi 00...he had been using #4 shot...I tried one in the 870 19".... pretty decent spread imo. I wouldn't want to be on the wrong end, but if my life is on the line....I want the ammo designed for that situation....jmo. Would those small pellets penetrate bulky clothes/leather and drop a amped up meth head in his tracks....I dunno? Ain't worth finding out either imo...

If'n I was going to get a scattergun for the wife, it would be a 20, not a 12. She is a heck of a shot with pretty much everything, so the question was a bit academic. I think overall a rifle is easier to handle. My buddy has a Marlin .22 rifle that he has his wife and daughter trained up to use. Will not stop them, but it is likely to make them want to go someplace else.

I am far from an expert on the reaction of burglars.
I would guess and bet money that 99% of the average burglar will beat a hasty retreat the second they realize a homeowner is awake and armed. My revolver will not make any noise until I pull the trigger. Again 99% of the bad guys will be arseholes and elbows and be gone in seconds. In the movies and TV the bad guys keep coming. If they think you have drugs or lots of cash or gold or something easy to steal they might. Those are often home invasions. I don't do drugs, and I don't know any drug dealers at all. I don't have gambling or have large sums of cash around. Odds are low that anyone would see my house as a home invasion target. We all want to be prepared for the worst, and hope we never have to use that protection.

I can't imagine my wife wielding my 870, nor being able to rack my 9 in an emergency... thus why I'm shopping for a revolver.
