I disagree. Anyone who breaks into a home in the middle of the night has to assume the home is occupied and that the homeowner is ready for a fight. I highly doubt anyone breaks into a house (at least late at night) and then acts surprised when confronted by the homeowner. If your house is broken into while you're home, you should assume you are fighting for your life and act accordingly. And make sure the cops can only hear your side of the story.

#1 - No skin. Skin to tough. Do the same thing with a pig carcass with skin.

#2 - even so, the shot only penetrated as a shallow wound. The meat is 4" thick and it basically didn't go though. So, nasty, shallow wound. It will HURT, but it will not likely stop or kill.

And again, most pistol-caliber rounds will zip through multiple layers of drywall with ease as well, often with more "lethality" than a .223 round after they exit. If you don't want to take my word for it, you can contact the FBI's FTU (or whatever they call it these days). They've done exhaustive scientific studies/experiments on the subject, and I'll defer to those results/conclusions over a couple YouTube vids. YMMV...

My dogs will be yapping like crazy at the first wiggle of the door knob or slight noise outside.

My house has been invaded 16 times and was I glad to have major fire power to repel them. No that’s not right. My house has been invaded 11 times and I successfully repelled each attack. Hmmm, no that’s not right either. My house has been broken into 6 times and forcefully invaded twice. No that’s not right either. After 63 years, nothing has happened to me, my friends, my relatives, my parents, or their friends. We must not live in the right neighborhoods. Maybe you folks need to move.

Rick, you have the luxury, and attendant security, of living in a rural American utopia. Many people do not.

A good example of someone who does not might be a woman that works at the company from which my wife recently retired. An Indian immigrant (legally), her husband owns a budding cab company and she works as a medical assistant. Between their two incomes, they can barely afford to live in the Puget Sound area, in reasonable commuting range from their work. They are a working couple, necessarily gone during mid day. Their rental home has been broken into at least five or six times at last count. Thank God neither have been home when this has happened, at least not yet. They are hard working, honest people, saving diligently towards the day they can move out of that neighborhood. That day is at least a couple of years down the road. What would you suggest in the interim?

Jeff, point well taken for those good people. From my house, My American utopia is less than a tenth of a mile from a trailer park teaming with meth heads, one of which slaughtered her entire family in Carnation a few years back. Our mail boxes and cars, including my wife’s have been broken into. Downtown is another trailer park, where one KC Sheriff SUV can be seen more often than not. America yes, but not utopia for all. That’s part of the reason I bought my Walther. The other is the beasties in the wild when I hike and bike the backcountry alone. Just today I got my Concealed Carry Permit.

As far as the best deterrent, statistics have shown that houses with one or more large dogs get broken into far less. Your neighbors, if they can afford one probably should get one, or just borrow Ed. I have a friend with motion detectors on the front and back of their house which triggers in their house a recording of a pissed off German Shepard. They only turn them on when they leave the house because they got tired of leaping out of their skins with false alarms. You see my friend, I like to poke the bear too because it is so darned easy.

One of the main things that started the question in my mind was reading a report done by, I believe, the FBI regarding the shootout with a person high on something (PCP?) and the resulting damage of the different rounds shot.

It wasn't the 1986 Miami incident, but something else...and I'll be damned, but I can't find it. Bottom line was that shooting a zombie, the .223 did nothing to stop him, only the larger caliber pistol rounds that shattered bone etc. brought him down.
