My niece, a very healthy 26 year old and her bunch of friends all have it. Half of the group ended up in hospital and one's still in there.

I only know 2 people (coworkers) who have had the flu this year. Local hospitals have tents in their parking lots to handle the emergency room overflow.

I have never had a flu shot and I can't remember the last time I had the flu. My wife used to get one when she was teaching, none this year. My middle son is required to get a shot from the USMC - he hates that he feels congested and achy for a few days after.

If that 9-35 million statistic is correct that's 3-10% of the population being infected.

Our local paper had infection rates by county a couple weeks ago. I did the math and came up with less than a 1% infection rate which seemed suspiciously low.

This years' strain certainly has been unusually potent. I wonder if the higher death rate could be linked to other drug use - like the Xanax user above. There certainly seems to be a real explosion of that use coincident with this outbreak.

My wife and I just got over it. We got the tamiaflu stuff on the first day which I think helped. It was still over a week of feeling like crap.

My wife picked up the Type A-strain a few weeks ago.

I forced her to go to the doctor when she suddenly started having a low grade fever and the test for the flu came out positive. She caught probably caught it from someone at our neighborhood super-bowl party that passed onto to half the residents in the cul-de-sac.

She lucked out, severe symptoms only lasted about 3 days after taking tamiaflu .
I Kept the kids away from her and I took tamiaflu with Guinness as a precaution and so far so good.

Meanwhile 3 of my co-workers are out with the flu this week during tax season :-(

I went to India last year and one of the immunizations in my porcupine arms was a flu vaccination. My wife "planned" to get a vaccination, but didn't. She has said this several years in a row now. I get the vaccine every year. Cheap - $25, to help prevent a week out of work.

When I worked for Cooper-Cameron and Solar Turbines, they had several events where you could just walk up and get one, on the company. Again, $25 to prevent a potential week out of work.

My daughter and I get the flu vaccine. The wife does not on the grounds that she gets really sick from the vaccination. I would get the vaccination as it can save your life.
Consult your doc and see what he/she thinks.

It's a total low % crapshoot even when they do get it right....this year's was only 10% effective from what I heard. Never had a flu shot in my life...never will...can't remember how many decades it's been since I've had the flu...4 at least.

This is where i would be tempted to say that I haven't had the flu (or a flu shot) in over a decade but I don't want to jinx myself

My advice: stay away from kids. Grade schools are incubation labs.

Yeah, that was my logic too. --I'm on day 5 of this hell, but at least I'm no longer shivering like a street junky.

Thing is, that "10% effective" news item was focusing on one of the A-strains.

Yeah, I got hit with a B-strain - which would have been halted by the 'flu shot.'

IOW, 'the flu shot' targets more than just one strain.

Hope that helps.

Methinks this year's flu shot targeted 3 strains as I recall hearing on the news (MUST be true ) Sorry it bit ya...now who can we blame?

Damnit - it hurts when I laugh.

For the record, you're the one suggesting the the MSM is to blame for pushing the "it's not effective" narrative.

This flu thing , i'm 42
Never had flu.
Never been sick more then a day
And never sick enough , not to go to work.

People drop out all around me.. I get a mild headache and take an aspirine or something.
I may go home an hour early and i'll be back the next day.

I really don't know what it must be like to be sick for 5 days in a row.
