I'm sure the OP will love late-period John Coltrane (just kiddink!)
https://youtu.be/6VEgbmM8Xew Yes, it opens with a *15-minute* bass solo by Jimmy Garrison. Nothing, but nothing, transports me like Trane.

That rendition is good, but this one from Montreux is just smoking'. This is jazz from the day

I don't understand music at all....I love to listen to jazz stations when they are describing what is going on in the song and try to listen for it. Clearly it's something I just don't have an ear for, but I thought this demo is pretty cool:

I believe Ray Charles was my entry into jazz...
But I have used Miles Davis "kind of blue" to get a few people started on jazz. Pretty sure I have every Return to Forever album. Maybe it is my age but I'm listening to more classical music, mostly on my work commute (because it makes me less likely to kill people). However I still have days when I am feeling rambunctious and throw on some rock and roll to crank it up. Also still a big blues fan.

I like jazz, play sax. Just don't like most of that free form Fusion crap that should have been embarrassed out of the jam session it got started in.

In music, if you make a mistake, its a mistake. If you do it again, its jazz, baby.

That's right, Stuart.
With jazz if you stray too far enough outside normal limits and keep doing it you'll circle right back in. |

Took men to drive those.
I don't know about jazz. If I just want some background music that I don't pay any attention to, I play the local jazz station. But they are so damn busy trying to raise money that they are annoying. I'm not that big a fan to dial up Pandora. |

Probably already been said... good starter albums are Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" and Dave Brubeck "Take Five". I happen to love Wes Montgomery too - but I'm a (bad) guitar player and also build them (guitars). I tend towards the blues side of the spectrum. There are many others. I draw the line at the a-tonal "skronk" jazz that many restaurants seem to play in order to clear out dawdling customers....

For all you "they are just making it up as they go" guys... you do know many of these jazz musicians are playing off charts right.
Just because it is complicated and/or chaotic doesn't mean it is coming out of nowhere. I admit it is an acquired taste and I'm not a huge fan... but you don't have to "get" everything in life

Miles, Monk, Dave, Wes, Ramsey, Grover, James, Mingus, Weather Report, Sea Level...on and on. Jazz comes in all forms, moods. In college this was a go to after a few glasses of wine with a consenting coed: My roommate when I was first stationed at Pax toured with Pat Metheny as a sound board operator when he was in college. I met Pat after a concert at Merriweather Post in the late 80's. Great guy.
