If MN is John Deere, M/96 is Fendt.
Yup, I have one of these that my dad sporterized in the 80’s. This is my most accurate rifle.

I have killed coyotes at 450 meters (shot out of my bathroom window), 375 meters (shot from my kids playground), and 850 meters (shot off my front porch).

These are heavy but very accurate.

Heavy? Geeezus...

The Swedish Mauser is in a whole different class than MN. It is a German Mauser...that is like comparing a Zil to a Benz.

During WW1 Westinghouse made the MN' s for the Russians. They were also made in Finland by Sako. Many were dropped by Soviet troops in their 1940 invasion and refurbished by the Finns.

I don't see anything really special about them.

I do have a Swede sniper though. It is the best of the Mauser snipers and the only one you can tell that isn't a put together.

I was watching one of those alaskan shows, the gal was putting down a wolf with Iron sights MN.

Yea I've got a couple of 'em.

Damn loud and damn accurate with the 7.62x54R.
And damn hard on the shoulder! I also have a pair, carbine & what I made into a sniper rifle with period correct scope and mount.

My son has a MN that was given to him by his cousin as an 18th birthday present, so we have one in the family. But I'd keep a special place in my collection if I came upon an authentic Winter War capture MN. What a piece of history.

I absolutely love M96 Swedish Mausers. I need to find another one - I've foolishly let a few go over the years. Always thought I wanted a more "modern" rifle, able to handle higher pressures, in that caliber. I now own both a Ruger #1 Light Sporter and a Winchester Model 70 in 6.5x55. Two of my favorite rifles in one of my two or three favorite calibers.

Never been a fan of the MN. Very effective, very stout battle rifle; they just never did it for me. Not all that accurate, not all that powerful, just kind of a rude and crude bludgeon kind of thing. Not accurate enough to shoot someone in the head, but certainly beefy enough to crush someone's head. I think Townsend Whelen once said "only accurate rifles are interesting". MN's are not very interesting.
