My two Pekingese (who now live with my parents) would absolutely protect my dad who is a stroke survivor. They know that he's handicapped and they are so very protective of him.

Our first one, Lily, has also tried to protect my mom from 2 Pitbulls. She suffered a bite to the abdomen, but she's still good.

Our two Wiener dogs are brave as long as there is a fence or a glass door between them and the "threat." That threat might be a leaf or worse of all, someone walking a dog down the street without the express permission of our dogs, and no dog ever gets that permission.

My wife the master gardener bought several flower pots recently and they look like Terra-cotta but are in reality painted plastic. One was blowing around in the back yard and just moving a little. It was deemed a horrible threat and barked at until I put it a safe place on the back porch. So a bad guy with a flower pot is safe from them.

As I mentioned, their job is to be alert and they are. When we are expecting guests I open the solid wood door and just lock the glass storm door and the dog go to code red alert. No one ever needs to ring a door bell. We know when anyone is approaching.

They both seem to have timers in their brains for how long they can bark before I come shut them up. They get about 60 to 90 seconds max in the daytime. Way less at night. If they exceed that they get locked out of the back yard and only get access to the side yard and of course the house.

I am not sure if my Boxers would protect me or not. They are ferocious about protecting our home if they don't know you and you come to the door, but gentle as a puppy with strangers when off our property.

That said, when I am out of town and the wife is home alone, one sleeps 10 feet back from the front door and the other sleeps on the stairway landing that overlooks the front door. When I am home they sleep on their beds in our bedroom...

Absolutely ! St. Bernards are very friendly dogs, but as a kid they were better than bodyguards.
