Current dog is a Field spaniel. Not gonna happen. He would hide behind me or run.

My last dog was a 65lb Rott/lab mix. That dog would stand in the gap against all comers. If someone even raised their voice she would get between us, face off the person talking, and start with the low menacing growl that said "I don't think I like your tone Mr." In 16 years she never bit anyone but she didn't have to. Message quickly received.

My male dog is an English shepherd mix. Have seen him take down 2 dogs chasing a group of young kids across a playground...nobody saw him coming...not even sure he knew what he was doing.

I was in the front yard with Zoe my 20 lb Jack Russel when a dog at least twice her weight and size started to charge directly at me...Zoe went straight at that dog and chased that dog down the street nipping at its heels all the way.

The young dog would. The old dog would bark because that's about all he could do. The young dog is 140 lbs., originally bred to take on wolfs and I've seen his intensity when dealing with the Dummy's dog from two doors over.

Dawgs are like people.....on instinct, when confronted, some will retreat, others will become aggressive in defense (even laid back ones...)....size don't matter imo.

my neighbors old dog, dead now, was is in bad shape. we went for a walk and the dog followed. another dog down the road came out after us and the neighbors dog "came to life", and ran out between us and the other dog ready to fight it off.

My 65# Aussie is generally on patrol on our 10 acres, and will scare off anything that moves. He's a big schweety, and is really socialable, but has nipped someone who delivered a package in uniform....trying to tell him he didn't belong on our front porch.

I wouldn't want to be the person who tried to attack my wife, or I....game on !

Yep, I'm sure they both would. We have had other dogs that would too. We've even had dogs that if I was rough-housing with the kids or the missus and they made noise like they were in distress, the dog would get upset and come over and very gently grab my hand with their mouth to stop me. THey didn't want to hurt me, but they also didn't want me to upset anyone else.

Without a doubt our female Chinese Sherpei "Lily" would give her life to defend me and my wife. The Sherpei was bred to guard Chinese Temples. The large loose skin folds protect the dog from fatal attack, allowing them to break free with minimal injury. The Sherpei is not a dog for everyone! But, Lily, who by the way was a recovery dog, has a sweet disposition with family, friends and especially children. Their devotion is always apparent. One of the most interesting dogs I have ever had the pleasure to have.

Mine is border collie mix, good alarm dog, submissive if she knows you and/or if on a leash, but if you threaten one of hers off leash she can turn. She's never bitten anyone, but I've seen her attack coyotes and she hates bearded men with baseball caps.

B.C.s are funny little dogs.
Most of the time they are very predictable but sometimes they surprise you.
The old BC would certainly protect my wife. He was her dog and very protective of her. I have a story, but my wife would disapprove of me posting it!
The new BC I think would lend a hand if you were confronted with a problem. She is very brave or overestimates her size sometimes.
She was attacked by two big mutts in the alley last summer and she did not back down and did a little damage. She must have scared the one badly as she was covered in crap from one of the other dogs... Bath time!
My childhood dog (white GSD) stopped a couple of guys that were chasing me dead in their tracks. I had never seen her be so menacing towards people before that.

My dog is a standard poodle, bichon, schnauzer mix. About 40 pounds, tall and lanky. He loves everyone and I never expected any fierceness from him. There is a raccoon that will come and eat the cats food if I forget to bring it inside at night. Lately, the raccoon has been getting bolder and last week my wife opened the back door just after dusk at around 7:00 and the raccoon was up on the table eating the cats food. The table is on the back porch just outside the door. She barely got the door open, saw the raccoon and yelled. The dog was in his bed, but shot out the door with the meanest snarl I’ve ever heard from him. He chased that raccoon out of the yard and I haven’t seen or heard it since. He surprised me, so maybe he would. He is very protective of my wife. Here he is in his normal position and then laughing at one of my jokes.

We have two dachshunds. The male is a smooth black and tan, and has chased off all the packs of wolves, bears, and a heards of buffalo so we no longer have any trouble with them. They have been chased off. Last night the across the street neighbor was tinkering in his yard, as my wife finished some chore in one of the front flower beds. My wife invited him into our back yard to see our koi pond.

Our male dachshund started barking and ran into the house through the side of the house doggie door, and then started barking at the back door. I went out there to see what was going one. The dos would not come in the back yard because a strange man was back there. He is not an guard dog, but an alarm dog.

Our female long-haired dappled dachshund is not afraid of strangers and just wants to be petted and lick on them.

When you own a Boerboel, the question isn't; "Do you think your dog would protect you if you were under attack?". The question is..."How do you stop your Boerboel from trying protecting you when you're NOT under attack?".

Teaching him that it was MY job to determine what is a threat or not, and NOT his job, was a difficult process. Unfortunately, when I was not home, he took over that responsibility over my wife and daughter.
