I mow my own. @ 1 acre. My grass wasn't all that green and had bare spots, so a friend that does lawn service told me to fertilize and lime. Before I was mowing maybe once, twice a week. ever since I started fertilizing and caring for the grass, I'm out there 3-4 times week cutting. Looks much better, but damn it grows fast now!

It can be. On a flat, level lawn with no trees, easy peasy. On a hilly yard with lots of trees and stuff to mow around, not so much. It's basically the same as trying to ride a horse in that it requires some core strength that will be sore the next day if you've never done it before. Just from trying to balance yourself on the mower as it moves and changes angles under your butt.

Some new models have power steering, and once you get used to it, especially for detail work, you get spoiled. I have a tow behind offset finish mower- which is mentally strenuous, as you constantly have to know where it is. In tight spaces that can be a trick. Off camber yards with steep inclines can be a bit of a workout as you are constantly shifting your weight on the seat to keep a center of balance. A lot of times I find myself grabbing, holding the fenders to keep myself from falling off. Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 06-11-2018 at 07:13 AM.. |

Been mowing for over 45 years....pushing, riding, pushing, riding....just depends. The riding part is typically just half of it regardless of lawn size. I've always wanted a mower like Crowbob has though...one that makes sammiches
![]() Can't afford one ![]() I like to work outside though....even if it's hot & humid... |

I have always cut my own.
My kids are getting old that they are helping now too. I enjoy doing it and it gives me a chance to take my shirt off in the yard and impress the ladies with my corpse white skin. |

Timely thread as I'm just waiting for the dew to dry a little bit more so I can cut mine today.
All (edit:most, there is one guy at the end of the street that cuts his own) of the neighbors use a lawn service of some type, or don't cut the lawn at all, or don't even have a lawn to cut. I recently started watering religiously again as my wife was tired of it looking brown all the time. Can't wait to see what it'll look like after today as I found some fertilizer I forgot about in the shed the other day when I was cleaning it out. Spread that two days ago so it should be turning greener soon.

I mow my own mostly as a matter of principal. I don't like doing it and our lawn/landscaping is pretty marginal compared to the rest of our neighborhood. My oldest is 6, so it will be his turn in a few years. Mostly I am against hiring people to do things that we can easily do for ourselves.
I used to thing only 1 or 2 people in the neighborhood did it themselves but Ive been paying closer attention lately and I think it is closer to 5-10%

I would be cutting my own right now if it would stop raining. I have 2 acres of green desert to mow, plus trimming around the house. I use a 72" finish mower for the desert and a 44" Grasshopper ZTR for the rest. I

Counterclockwise?

I cut my own grass, my father cut his own grass, my father's father cut cut his own grass. lol
Takes we an hour with trimming and blowing. So no biggy. It's the only exercise my fat ass gets these days. Although the 2 beer probably cancels that out.

Just over an acre but lots of beds and obstacles. Just over an hour usually. I usually enjoy it, not many jobs give such immediate satisfaction.

About 1/3 acre of lawn. I do it with a 21" walk behind snapper commercial. Getting to be a bit of a hassle at my current age, 74. Usually takes 3-4 hours taking a break or two. Breaks about 15 minutes, drinking ice water.
With my medical issues, it's good exercise...and yes, time alone with my own thoughts.

I have a few people in the neighborhood that mow their own yard. Only one other guy has a really nice lawn, but almost no flowerbeds. Most of the other home owners keep it cut, but not fertilized and watered. I have a water well just for the sprinkler system. With the flowers and all the flowerbeds we have added to the yard we have the nicest looking yard in the neighborhood.
