Docklid condenser clearance in a CIS engine

I spent the last 3 days trying to get the dick lid mounted A/C condenser to clear the CIS air box with no luck!, anyone here that has the rear condenser mounted successfuly on his CIS engine without any clearance issues??

My '75 Targa had AC when I got it in 2010 (I've since deleted the AC). I'll see if I can find some pics. As I recall, the condenser was curved to match the deck lid and was very tight against the CIS air box. There were rub marks on both the air box cover and the condenser.

My condensor that I removed when I deleted my AC was curved matching the decklid. It was tight but didnt hit the aircleaner box top. Is your condensor flat?

No its curved, and looks very well made. Its part of the A/C kit that I got from Classic Auto Air (originally a Rennair kit).

I have one mounted in my SC without issue. It's tight though. I'll take some pictures of the mounting brackets and post them for you.

Good luck. I fiddled a lot and still have 2 spots that have interference issues but not really bad and not on the airbox. Fins are slightly deformed but still flow air; maybe a couple sq. inches. Maybe this winter it is time to remove the compressor bracket and mill some material off of the back. Just not enough adjustment options with the condenser mounting brackets.
Griff (kuehl) told me a few years ago that it is possible to carefully shape the condenser a bit but I am reluctant to attempt this.

Here is the Retroair (now Classic Auto Air) rear condenser installed in my 87 Carrera. I used Griffiths hoses for this install.

Center Mount



Left Mount



Right Mount



When mounting the condenser check the grill T-bolts, 911-559-433-00, clearance. I needed to shorten the long ones to get enough clearance.

For the center mount I used high density foam weather stripping from the hardware store instead of the low density Porsche foam, 911-537-141-00. This has held up well over the last several years.

Thanks a million guys for the pics. It seems that I need to move the condenser much closer to the lid, I will try to fabricate a couple of Z shaped aluminum brackets to do the job, the L shaped brackets that came with the kit does not permit that.

You should not have to make new brackets. Mine was a tight fit and I might have bent the condenser left and right mount for better alignment.

Before making new brackets try loosening the hinges slightly and then fit the condenser.

Harold, Your condenser do you know how much thinner over a stock mount unit. I have PMO CARBS and had to remove my stock condenser just went a/c delete at that point.

Just measured my rear condenser's thickness in the fin area. Lucky, I still have the factory one in storage. Measured with a cheap digital caliper.

Porsche 34 mm
Retroair 26 mm

So you gain about 8 mm additional clearance.

I managed to get it installed with about a millimeter to spare!, I fabricated two new brackets using a 1/8 in. thick aluminum sheet plate that I had laying around, here are a couple of pics of the final fitment :

Here is a factory style condenser on a '74 with a 3.0 cis engine. Note the factory center bracket effectively sets the height.
