has anyone ever run turbo front fenders with SC/Carrera rears?

i was looking at the Guntherwerks 400R and was kind of struck by the fact that the track widths are the same front and rear. it got me thinking, has anyone ever tried something similar on a SC/Carrera? all that would be required is a turbo front and stock rear. ~9" flares all around.

i tried google, but was unable to locate anything any closer in execution than Project Nasty.

would it just wildly unbalance the look of the car? i feel like there's a lot of front grip to be gained. if the car doesn't have unlimited HP, there isn't really a need for 13" steamrollers out back. but 245 square would be really gnarly in a light chassis...

I've never seen it, but personally I think it would look weird. I think the Gunther car pulls it off because of how wide the car is on both front and rear.

I remember this coming up in a thread a while ago. Unfortunately I can't find a link to it. However, I believe most people felt that only having the flared front left the car with an unbalanced look or just something slightly off. Sort of like the uncanny valley but for cars. I'll search a bit more to see if I can't find the thread.

I'd be interested in seeing it too. Seems like the main issue would be the vertical edge of the fenders. On SC/Carrera rear flares, the vertical edge is smaller than on turbo flares. The flat vertical edge on turbo flares gives them a boxier look that wouldn't match the back. Otherwise it sounds pretty cool to me!

I've often thought that a slight flare on the front of an SC/Carrera would be appropriate, and in fact should have been done at the factory.

I think a front turbo would be a bit much.

I'm in the process of having 7" Euromeisters widened to 8" for my front so I can run 225/45-17 tires to match the 255/40-17 on 9" rears. Looking forward to a bit more grip in slow turns when Autocrossing. I'm not anticipating having to flare the fenders to make it work, but might bang/weld something up over the winter to see how it turns out.

i see what you mean. but i think a 'mini turbo' look could work.

nothing that a small belt sander and a steady hand can't sort out. it's not like we're talking about a concourse project.

my CCWs are 8s and i think to run a 225/45, i'd have to have the car sit a smidge higher than i want. in a perfect world, we could get front fenders like Project nasty. turbo-esque flare, but not nearly as wide.

i'm thinking of picking up a set of FG turbo flares (cheap) and seeing if they can be modified to give less flare without looking like a trashcan stabbed on a fender.

Have you seen:

STR Carrera: WIDE Front Wheels Part 3 (and new tire brand!)

Matt is a user here and has a thread about the car:

SCCA STR Autocross Carrera Build

He is my inspiration to send my Fakefuchs to Weldcraft for widening to 8". He went to 9" and a 245/40-17 tire which actually worked, as unlikely as it seems. The key of course is the wheel offset. I'm going to play with various spacers but am making other changes (offset balljoints) at the same time.

Back to the topic at hand. Project Nasty to me doesn't look like it has any extra width when compared to stock? Maybe a bit more bulge (it does look great!) but no extra clearance.

i have a lot of pics of this car on my phone. it looks to me that the re-shaping of the fender really comes in to play under compression. the re-profiling of the 'flare' makes more room when the wheel is up in the fender. that's what really counts unless you absolutely hammer the car. (which is a life i'm about...but not with this car)

EDIT: the other thing is that PN's front arches appear to be re-radiused. look at how they are perfect arches with no flattening out like on the car below. that also makes for a lot of room.

i have rolled the front fenders on my car. they're very flat. but i'm still some ways away from driving it, so i'm trying to get my best game plan laid out before i get there.

i've got those two links open in other tabs right now. i'll check them out.

Yeah I guess it's the 911 ST look, which I think looks great. I'd be curious to see it on an impact bumper car though. I'll let you handle the belt sander on your own car. Post pics!

it can work as long as the lip profiles are matched. The edge profile of a 930 flare is highly rounded where the 911SC/Carrera flare has a squared off lip. There are many aesthetic reasons to make this change.

If you want them to match you have to get out the hammer and dolly. 15 years ago you could not buy 911ST flares in steel so I had to make them.

ST Project update: roll your own(long with pics)

On my current project I am keeping the car narrow body and have changed the profile. Go to post 262 in the link below.

I've got 245/45/17's and 275/40/17's on Carrera fenders. It can be done... No need for wide body!!

Reviving yet another dead post. I only see this as being a positive improvement. It would make the front as wide as the rear would it not? really keen to see pics if possible. Anyone have any leads?

I’ve seen the combo of Turbo fronts with Carrera rears, and personally am not a fan — the Turbo’s are much more rounded and pronounced, and to me, are too mismatched with the Carrera rears. I have at least one photo in my collection of a few thousand desktop images, if I can find it will post.

One possible solution I’d like to look into one day is something DP makes that you can find on their “Speedy Irishman” — fiberglass (or carbon/kevlar) front fenders with 8" flares.

The 953 (959 Dakar prototype) used 930 front fenders.
