You have probably answered this before, but let me ask again. What work have you done on the engine in all those miles?

Did some regular service on it nothing major.It was leaking a little.In 2008 ,year before i shipped it to Europe i took it completely apart. Valve job ,piston and cylinder measured and check for balance by good guys at the LAX airport(forgot the name, maybe Engine machine service?) They were an excellent shop regarding 911 ... So, old piston and cyl (probably once before replaced for an original set) All main bearings were like new -factory .Somebody put a new set in before me,i think.Replace them with Porsche bearings not Glyco. After ,just new piston rings and resealed the engine.In the same time i had the transmission work done my friend oldtimer 911 mechanic Fred at "Specialist" on Lincoln blvd in Venice,Ca.Had to be fixed for the bearing spinning on the main shaft housing. They also balanced my rod and replaced the bushings.Crank checked out fine. And ofcourse new chains and rails..new clutch kit-I still have one spare i wonder if i ever use it;-))))basically when i shipped the 911 i shipped in container almost everything for it in spare parts. That is all i did .....back in 2014 in France i was doing an oil change before my trip to Czech Rep. When i got to Czech i had a engine noise-from camshaft 4-5-6.I figured i must have missed one valve adjustment. So after i got back to France i took it apart and tried to adjust the valves but to my horror i see that the camshaft it totally worn out-no oil on it..Crazy i thought. so it took all the valve covers off and of course my 1-2-3 cam was gone too? It took me a while to find the problem....to make the story a little shorter.... I took the oil filter off just to check what it up..while in my had something rattled it it. It was like dirt coming out of it. Solution ......when i put the new oil filter on ,before the trip, those nasty French Hornets made a nest in it!!Filter was on the shelf but they somehow got it it. So the cocoon from them blocked my lubrication to the cams . It was time for cleaning and flushing the whole engine.....many hours but it worked out well. Got one new cam from friend of mine in LA and another for 100 bucks from owner Joseph at https://www.garage-caruso-cannes.com I have replace most the the rockers too. Since then no problems at all just driving the hell out of it..... lesson learned ..always check your oil filter before installing it.... Ivan |
French hornets, so nasty! ;-)
Somehow you were lucky that it only affected cam lubrication and not lower engine. When you did valve job, pistons and all back in 2008, did you also change the studs? |

Ivan, thanks for that detailed reply. With 10,000 miles since my engine build, I hope it will outlast me!

u r welcome....i`m sure you will be fine -if you lube it it will run;-)

Today i went for an a/c appointment,my 911 still impressed me after have it for 27 years.Back In LA (have never use the a/c in 14 years) i got the fitting for 134 free on thinking i might do the conversion.Replaced the receiver dryer and expansion valve and all o rings....for couple of year in France i did some a/c charge but it did not last.
Last year i finally found out why..my blue fitting i have installed was too long and the charging connector never reached the valve.Just got the correct fitting for the compressor last week. So charged it today and voilaaa 38 F alias 3,33 Celsius.. No leak and cold as a fridge...... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1716219695.jpg A little starter info........ recently my solenoid gave me a troubles...i have one extra starter but i ordered new piece from Germany...So today i took the starter out trying to replace it.But, the shaft on the new one is too wide and it does not fit inside the starter housing.It is 0,88 inch 22,40 mm The original is smaller 0,82 inch and 20,8mm........ Have to send it back... So if you are getting new solenoid make sure it will fit .... Looks like you took some fun roads where you could really open it up! 444 miles in one weekend with an air cooled 911 sounds like a great time
|
thanx Matt..it is called the Autobahn and on most sections is no speed limit;-)

Just got back today from weekend trip to south on Munich Bavaria to bike and fun around the river Isar and never ending forest in Grunwald.
Did 417 miles again 1/3 of tank left. On the way home i had the Autobahn almost just for myself... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1721058054.jpg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1iAjcCXl28 Ivan |
Free Autobahn -> excellent!
And with a radar detection app even more fun. The kids of "Last generation" here in GER demand with protest street blockades that the speed limit must be set to 100 kmh cause of climate change. So let's enjoy the time now with the sound of higher revs as you never know what will happen in the future. EDIT: I See – muy important, your personal gas station on the back seat :-D |
The kids of 'last generation' in Europe ? look at the camping sites of festivals, just when the festivals are over...there has never been more garbage left as trash as now with these youngsters...
we learned to clean up after ourselves... |

i`m happy with the outcome so is the boy from Prague........http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1722457583.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1722458034.jpg here is the drive..enjoy...i did;-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46hRqXZCadc |

well..this engine was build by one person who i hate to work after-again silicon everywhere.More work in later before the end of the year. The problem was simple..ignition timing was off 12 degrees wrong vacuum connection at the throttle housing and mainly frequency valve-oxygen relay was wrong.i have found in my stash original relay ..plugged it in and adjust the fuel mix..the car became flying like a jet;-) The boy is very happy so was i ;-) Just finished the Gulf today too;-) Ivan |
