Where can you get an IROC tail/lid?

Like this one... (I'd give photo credit for it but I don't know who's it is...)

gt racing has them in two widths, one full iroc width, one in a smaller size which is not actually IROC. It's actually the same tail used on the early turbos and Carrera's after '74. It's what prompted the name "whaletail". You could probably get an "early turbo tail" at lots of FG places if you called and asked.

I think I'm after the narrower one like the one pictured...thanks! At first glance it doesn't look like they have the narrow one.

Isn't that an early Turbo (or Carrera 3.0) tail?

It's a 1976 turbo whale tail. I picked mine up from a fellow pelicanhead "magillia" for $350. The 77 turbo whale tail looks similar with a slightly larger secondary grill. The secondary grill was for a auxillary engine oil cooler. I see them on e-bay once and a while. Here's a pic of mine.

Thats an early 930 tail, the early Carrera tails were the same but w/o the smaal slots in the aft edge, 934 was the same but had bigger slots in the aft edge.

A true IROC tail is much longer and wider but has the same general shape. tHe folowing are poor shots of cars w/ IROC tails

Did the IROC tail ever come with a rubber lip -- and was it ever available for street cars?

Mine is wide and all fiberglass, but it's also aftermarket.

Thats another difference, only the street cars had rubber lips, the IROCs were all f/g/ From the width yours looks to be an IROC.

there are a few on ebay right now,

this one just sold

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2424089317&category=42606&rd=1

a kinda ratty one from PAR but might go cheap

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2423824367&category=6762&rd=1

this one is priced to high, it won't get any bids. I'd contact him after the auction or place a late bid and make him an offer.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2424498222&category=42611

They show up fairly frequently and go for under $400.

Regards,
Scott

Jack, I'm going to call you tonight.

Everyone else ...

The IROC tale, affectionately known as the "Tea Tray", never came with a rubber lip. It was not sold on street cars. There were teams, however, that modified these tales post-IROC series - modifications included lips and coolers.

The tail which is my personal favorite was done by the Martini team on one of their RSRs from the mid-70s. It was a Duck tail, but the rear fenders had molded lips that met up with the Duck tail to form one big wing around the cars a$$. I think it's called the Queen Victoria or Queen Anne ... something about British Royalty or something. I can't find any pictures to post, but this car usually makes an appearance at the Monterey Historics ... it's totally beechin.

A Few (de)tails:
The 2nd grille on the Turbo 3.0 varied in size depending on wether the car had AC or not, and depending on the year. Only the '77 with AC had the larger 2nd grille.
The "IROC" tail was available in the exact same shape, with the rubber lip, on the RSR 3.0.

Alas, Mr9146, I think this may be the "personal favorite tail" you were looking for...

My Menory has been fading over the years, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the #46 car was a 1973 2.8 Martini Racing/Factory works car. It sported a "Mary Stewart Collar" tail for greater downforce while racing in the Prototype Class and achiving 1st in class and 4th overall?

The IROC whaletail with rubber lip was, in fact, sold on one 'street' car ... the 1974 RS 3.0, which actually came with both long and short versions ... some governments didn't like the fact that the tail stuck out past the rear bumper!

This is the genuine 3.0 RS article. It's the same size (53") as the IROC spoiler, but with a rubber lip. It's quite a bit larger than the one that BGCarrera32 is after

Where are the original IROC tails attached to the metal deck lids?
I recently got one and it is attached to a metal lid.
I know the authentic duck tales were made that way.
In all of my years of Porsche restorations I have never seen one like this one.
