The engine of my '84 is currently out of the car- did the clutch and a bunch of other stuff. Ran through the valve adjustment again, and while I was at it checked all the cylinder studs to make sure none were broken (which I didn't think any were anyway).
But, all I did was throw a socket wrench with the hex bit in there and give them a good tug. Do these studs stretch? Should I pull out the torque wrench and go for a value? I am *really* leery of snapping a stud...what can you tell me? Thanks! -BG

I'd let sleeping dogs lie. You don't want to bust any of those studs.

While you're at it though, I would torque down the rocker shafts. That's pretty easy with the engine out.

I would torque the head nuts to specs, there are several ways but what i would do is just throw torque it to 27lbs-30lbs and if it clicks it is OK. It takes a lot more than 30lbs to stretch a stud, ask me how I know.
Also as Richard L said, torque the cam tower nuts and rocker shafts as well. What I would not do is to loosen the nuts and retorque. I am not sure if that buys you anything at this stage.

BTW, the engine I have has unknown miles if that influences your opinion any...probably in the 150,000 + range...
