85 Toolkit
I received an email from Pelican Parts today and one of the advertisements was for new factory tool kits. For some reason G series toolkits advertised only went up to 82, but I found another toolkit on the website for around $544
Is it worth buying the toolkit or is it better just putting some quality tools in the trunk that replicates what is in the toolkit? The main tool I would need to purchase is the Porsche P209 Alternator Fan Pulley Wrench, other than that everything else seems pretty basic. Am I missing something? Thanks. |

I don't think it's worth it. I had the same situation with my car when I got it. No tools. I just bought a repro pulley wrench and a small plastic tool box that I stocked with my own tools. I also bought a scissor jack and an air compressor.
Those new factory tool kits are nowhere near correct for your car anyway. You should be able to find an original complete kit that belongs to your year for the same money or less than the new kits. It's tricky though, you'll need to be careful because there were many subtle differences year to year. Mark

Tool kit.
![]() ^^^^^ This is the tool kit for our '86. However, be advised that tool kit contents vary from model to model, and year to year. Also, tool kits were shipped to the Porsche pre-delivery inspection in bulk, and out of the cars. Then to the dealer. In some cases, not in compliance with the model. To accumulate a tool kit on a one item at a time basis might take quite a while. While a good quality kit might cost the value you quoted, it might be a time saver. Best, Gerry

Thank you. Very helpful. I have all pretty much everything except the p209 alternator pulley which I need to purchase. I just have been negligent in putting in my car and realize that one day I might get burnt (especially on belt). I will take your advice and put in my car. I also didn’t realize trust there were many differences in tool kits.
Am actually driving almost daily thanks to zero international travel... difficult to explain to people how much I enjoy this car. |

The spark plug and pulley wrenches are probably the most useful tools in the kit, IMO. If you don't care about originality, everything else can be replaced with better tools.
Example - screwdriver with multiple bits, ratcheting wrenches, adjustable pliers (knipex pliers wrench).

I’ve only used the fan wrench from my original kit and have made my own set, because I haven’t ordered a aftermarket one yet. My kit is basically the Stahlwille 2018 calendar set roll with my own craftsman sockets, a Wera ratchet/extension and a Hazel 2505-2 Spark Plug Wrench. If anything I would look at what you get from the factory kit and build your own based on what you use or need.

When I bought my 85 911 in 1995 it did not come with the tool kit. I have carried the main tools I would likely need, but I have always been waiting to find a complete kit for a 1985 Carrera that is not crazy money. I have seen them on ebay for over a grand, and that is just stupid money.
So a nice set for $500 to $600 would be OK. Recently Porsche started selling old tool kits. They had kits for 924, and all the water cooled cars, and early 911s, but nothing for the 85 I have. The new kits have real fancy cases to hold the tools.

Glen,
Another option is to see what eBay seller He seems to be really knowledgeable about the right kits and completeness, I would trust him to have the correct pieces in his kits. Mark

Ivan your kit shows a couple of things the PET does not show for the 78SC and that my kit does not have. I would think the one for the battery with the rubber gripper came later no ?
Im also not sure what that short bar is between the lug nut wrench and pulley wrench in your pic . the PET for 78sc. ![]() Mine ![]() i have a little work to do to complete mine so i sub with some others for now in case i break down.

yes you are correct Ivan , they are from my Yamaha motorcycle. They are subbed in for now and look kinda close except for your eagle eye . ( ok i got busted ).
This is the best part i find about swap meets . Poking around finding a correct wrench that a guy wants 5 bucks for .. oh i miss the swap meets more than anything.
