Big Sockets
i.e. sockets larger than 19mm for use on the 911...
One covid project is to re-organize the tool boxes, and I found a rail with a bunch of big sockets on it, so... I'll start: 20mm was needed to pull the nut on the wiper motor (not sure why they couldn't use a 19mm or go up to the next DIN spec. size) 22mm - not sure why I have this one actually... I believe the nut on the fan is 22mm.
I have up to 36mm in my tool box (not all for the 911...). |

I think the fan nut is 24 mm and the steering wheel nut is 27 mm if memory serves.

Being in Oregon...is that what makes you collect big sockets? It must be as I've added couple 1/2 sockets in need of working on BMW and Toyota. Porsche is not complaining so no new tools other than I bought this to replace those on snap-on sockets:

M14 is usually 22 mm. Bottom rear shock mount? A bunch of suspension bolts are 22 and 24 mm.

Just pick up a 3/4" drive metric set and a 3/4" torque wrench then you are never short. Big torque wrench makes installing the axle shafts easy.

You might want some larger wrenches as well ... i believe the oil lines use 32 and 36 mm wrenches.
The biggest socket you need is for the axle !

Let's save wrenches for the "Big Wrench" thread
32mm - must be for when I was swapping the rear spring plates (??) |

FWIW, Alternator nuts are 22 mm (early) and 24 mm (late). Steering Wheel is 27 mm.

Amazing how these sockets accumulate over time and projects. Lots of tools in all of our boxes used only on our cars. Maybe a separate tool box for the big fastener tools which will provide more space for additional 10mm sockets and wrenches.

36mm is the largest socket I have - has to be from the rear suspension replacement but I forget which nut
springplate? |

I work on Ferraris and Porsches and have accumulated way too many big sockets and wrenches. Way bigger than 36mm.

There is a large socket needed for the rear axle nut as well. I bought one in a 3/4 drive for my 3 foot long breaker bar. Getting it off is easy. Getting it torqued to the crazy high pound foot torque setting (325 comes to mind but I would not bet on my memory alone) is the hard part. I took my socket to a truck stop, and found a mechanic to come out with his 3 foot torque wrench. $20 bucks and two click clicks and they were torqued.

I found a 700 ft lb torque wrench on eBay for a song, so now I can torque the crazy Porsche axle nut.
