67 912 R build $$ Looking for some stuff
I rescued a 67 built 68 912 from a field for $1000 USD
The story can be seen at https://www.912bbs.org/forum/threads/dived-into-the-912-game-now-what.46668/ So for anyone wanting to start with a rust bucket, I think I stopped count at $65,000. ![]() I say that not to be a jerk, or to claim stupidity, (my budget originally was about $30,000). If you are wanting a SWB and come across a rusty project, and cant afford a high dollar car... BUY it. It wont make financial sense, but its a blank canvas and you will learn a tonne, and that's half the journey. Knowledge! Anyways, I'm almost done, after 7 years. If anyone has any cool 911R stuff and parts can you PM me. I'm nearly broke now but still want to make this little SWB be the best 912R that Porsche never made. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Rob Joy in California has built several 1967 911R recreations over the past few decades. He created the molds off of one of the 24 911R's that he was commissioned to repair.
I wont divulge which one for privacy. He has had his hands in person and either viewed or worked on 8 of the 24 models There is a thread on Pelican on Bill Harris's car that Rob and Bill worked on. I'd like to say after working with him for 2 years, he is a very artistic, knowledgeable man with much Porsche experience and race work with team Orbital and others. I have also added the square weave carpet. Yes, I went that way. I actually want to drive it and have it be civilized enough to get coffee. Instead of a full out track style car. I did go with a lot of R parts. The car is a 68 912 with a big bore kit and 125 hp. Narrow body. Its how I'd imagine a 912 R if I was alive in 1967 and ordered one back then. Although I envisioned a 4cam but can't afford that. Corduroy Speedster seats covered at Intermeccanica Correct R steering wheel.- Wood Steering Wheels | Vintage Steering Wheels | Horn Buttons | Porsche Steering Wheels and Hockey Pucks Correct panels modeled off of of a 911R that was repaired 20 years ago. 911R custom narrow body front fenders Original 911r Mold RSR type hood with balsa and amber liner 911R Narrow front bumper to Werks spec 911R Narrow rear bumper to Werks spec 911R rear deck lid with amber liner 911R plastic door handles 911R rear tail lights with lights 911R engine lid grill Rear lid black strap hold downs Hood black strap hold downs 911R stainless lid hinges 911R acrylic vented ¼ window with trays Acrylic rear window Acrylic door windows with leather pulls straps Leather door stops 911R front turn signal / side marker lights 911R style exhaust but based on the 4cyl. All new Factory 1967 suspension. Sitting on 15x6 Fuchs Euro ride height. Spartan interior. Radio delete. And I went with the 2 piece 1968 only dash. I did not do fiberglass doors. Just for safety. The only think I'd like to do in the future is send the correct engine (on my shelf) to Benton and have him do a twin plug build massaged much like his personal 912.

I'm about 99% done. Just fixing a few things on the front and fitting fenders.
It's been a long journey from the Mouse Cage that everyone told me to run from. But I stupidly - saw it through. (my wife, understanding, but happy it's nearly over) I'm looking for some cool ideas, add-ons, 911r parts to make this build better. Hit me up! Cage ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

He is a busy man. And an artist first. But I feel like the stuff I have is almost as close to Porsche amber resin panels you could get.
Im lucky to get one of his last jobs.

I LOVE the idea of this car. Take a look at this 911R tribute (and the price!).

Very nice work. Your knocking on the door of early Ts and Ls power wise with 2 fewer cylinders and less weight, so I bet it is fun. Did you consider a Polo?

Outta my league, too. Since you were talking about a 4 cam 4 cyl, I thought the “less” expensive Polo might be in your wheelhouse. We can all dream and there are likely many that dream of a car like yours. Myself included. Just an awesome car.

Awesome.
I think starting with a $1000 rust bucket is the wisest choice you can make. Imagine if you'd bought a $25k 912 and discovered poor prior repairs or hidden rust? You'd have had to replace just as many panels to get where you are now. Great job, it's a lovely car. 7 years well spent.

I definitely was in the wheelhouse to be on budget. but I had both a metal worker and a painter that messed things up for me. The decision to make an R really was to take it to that next level given the amount of money I had invested. I still see many 912s at $5000 and yes they are rusty, but really.....I still think they are worth it for a person to buy and start over, (even adding a 2.7, or a 3Litre, to make a hot rod) especially when said person doesn't have $50k or more upfront to go buy a 912- or a 911. You end up being into the car for more, but you learned, and the car is completely redone and you now know its done correctly. Id buy a SWB LWB project 911 again now knowing what I have learned on these SWB cars and the differences from year to year from 65- 73. Id do the rust bucket again, but it would have to be a 100% complete car.

I wouldn’t second guess the investment of time or money for even a second. The ROI in experience, knowledge, pride, the finished product, etc. can’t be quantified. You, Johnny, Jamie, Chris and others provide a lot of inspiration and experiential direction for the forum.
