JW, turbo transplanters, please help...(930 sheetmetal)

I just spent 2 hours lifting my 930 engine into my '75 chassis, and everything was going smoothly-- UNTIL, I had the transmission loosely bolted up to the mounts, and the engine about 4 inches below its mounts.

I started raising up the engine so I could bolt up the motor mounts, and noticed that the flywheel-side engine tin sheetmetal (original 930 tin) was not clearing the engine bay. I think it's got an offset built in because the engine was mounted back further than standard in the 930 chassis (?). Anyway, did you guys use the 930 tin on your 930 conversions? What do I do to make it fit?

This picture is a view up to the flywheel-side tin on the passenger side. The circled area shows where the tin doesn't clear (it's the same on the driver's side), and will not allow the engine to be raised that last 4" into the bay. I could use the original 2.7 tin, but it doesn't have a cutout for the turbo oil pump...what to do?

Thanks!

When calculating dimensions for our bastard project, i found out that 930's made 78 and later have 30mm longer rear end in order to accomodate "exploding rubber clutch". 930/34 transmission that went into those cars also has longer clutch bell-housing. Engine you got is probably from one of those later cars so it has little longer sheetmetal to fill the gap....engine itself is as long as any 911 engine , so i guess it's just a matter of fabricating new sheetmetal...

Ah ha. That must be why my G50 wouldn't fit in my SC without moving the motor back.
Colin Have you tried to fit the rear mount on the motor first to see where everything lines up. Maybe the tranny mount needs to be modifyed and that would take care of some problems. It might create other ones though

the 77 930 tin should fit. or just modify some N/A tin.

Thanks everyone,
John, any idea what I'm doing wrong here if I can't get the '77 930 tin to fit?

It's got a lip on it that positions the vertical part about 1" further away from the engine than the N/A one - you can kind of see it in the picture...maybe this is not the right turbo tin?

The mounts do line up OK...

I just want to have a plan before I get out the Sawzall

the 87 style is pictured here. the 76-77 didn't have the extra lip across the top.

I have installed a '78 3.3 and a '92 3.3 in early cars '74 and '77 and did not have to modify the engine tin from either.

I ended up having to bend the upper lip on the left and right edges in toward the engine about .5", and then it cleared and went up. I don't know what sheetmetal I have - It doesn't look like JW's picture, and it doesn't look like the shop manual pictures either. Unsolved mystery, but at least I didn't have to cut it.

Thanks for the replies,
Colin
