Best way to lift engine on to stand/yoke
Hey guys,
I dropped my engine to replace the clutch and i would like to secure it to my engine stand/yoke to do the valve adjustment before putting it back in the car ... There is a flimsy looking eye hook on the intake but it doesn't look strong enough to lift the engine with ! Any suggestions ??? Cheers ! Phil

What will you lift the engine with? That is a lifting eye, if I understand you, but I'm unsure what another lifting point would be - assuming you would use two points to balance.
I raised my engine with a high lift floor jack. It worked OK with a second person balancing the engine.

I used two nylon straps to lift my 3.2 using a rented engine lift. Looped one thru the large slot in the engine mount bracket (opposite the crankshaft pulley) and the other looped under the two upper transmission mount bolts. These points are above the center of gravity and the engine was stable.
I looked at using the small eyelet you are referring to and thought the same thing, it looks too flimsy to me. |

I have an engine lift which i used to lift the car high enough to pull the engine out,i just need to get it onto my stand now. It's hard to believe Porsche doesn't provide for a way to lift it ...
Somebody must have a safe and simple way to do it ??? Cheers ! Phil

I used an atv jack and chocked blocks of wood to get the engine high enough. I just took my time to slowly lift it high enough to get it on the stand as I did not have an extra pair of hands or a crane. Worked fine and kept it well balanced the whole time.

The lifting eye works fine. Use your engine lift with two Nylon straps. One strap from the lift chain to the lifting eye and one strap, looped through the engine lift chain, with the strap end hooks, hooked into the holes, adjacent to the big oval slot in the engine mount bracket. I've done it this way many, many times w/o incident....your results may vary.
regards, Al

Engine Hoist.........
Phil,
There are many different ways to lift the 911 engines and I've been using these nylon straps for the front and chains for the rear side with my engine hoist similar to yours. Engine #1 (June 2011): ![]() Engine #2 (Sept. 2011): ![]() For the rear lifting points, I use the 2 upper transmission studs with washers and nuts to keep the chain in place. ![]() Tony |

Tony,
Thank you for posting your pictures.I will most likely use the engine support and transmission studs to lift it onto my stand... Just wondering though if the yoke is bolted onto the engine beforehand,it should be strong enough to use as a lifting point along with the engine support ??? Cheers ! Phil

I use a $230 table lift from Northern Tool. It works GREAT every time.

I used a tow strap. One hook in the lift eye by the breather and the excess wrapped around the engine support bar and back up to the lifting hook.

I have used 3 friends. I have also used an engine crane and a chain attached to some of the larger holes on the engine.

Two men no tools other than the stand and yoke. Bolt the yoke to the motor before lifting. Tip the stand over and slide it onto the yoke. 2 men lift the motor up and the stand will swing and right itself on its own.

The lifting eye works fine, don't sweat it, and of course if putting the engine on a stand, then the yoke is attached first and then it becomes an even better place to lift from. At the front, just lift anyway you please from the engine mount as shown in other photos using straps, chains, rope. I put a couple of spare bolts in the engine mount holes and used the chain on my "leveler" device.

The yoke, if you put it on first, is plenty strong to be the rear side lifting point. I still use the lifting eye, though, as it seems better centered even though I put the yoke on first, so it is ready when the motor is lifted up.
On my race motor, I have the alternator/fan strap hardware on top of the fan housing, with the bolt holding an oval steel ring. Most would fear this would overstress the fan housing, but that hasn't happened to me, and it means I can use chain there. But that was for an engine frequently removed. The nylon straps you see in the pictures are there to cushion the places where they press on other engine parts. Unless you use one of those long leveling bars, where everything is perpendicular. Those seem to be overkill for the rather occasional home use, but would be quite useful in a business shop. |
