Alternatives for Clock and its location

Hi folks,

Wanted to get the collective's thoughts on alternative uses for the clock location in the cockpit.

Would love to see what folks have replaced the clock with that could offer some function, data, etc?

Looking forward to ideas, thanks!

One of the more interesting ones I've read about lately was a air fuel ratio mixture analog display (AFR gauge) that fit in the hole.

A navigation display would be cool, though I have never seen a round one before.

I think someone made an air vent, ram air, maybe a track car?

DANGER! install volt meter now!!

I like the blackface analog model from the company AEM, as it looks very similar to the old-school VDO gauges that I sometimes already have in the cars. AEM’s kit, with the gauge, sensor, and cable, is part number 30-5130 and costs about $200.

Mine just shipped and will be here this week. It matches the fuel quantity gauge on the opposite corner of the panel, but with Voltage/AFR

This looks excellent. Do you mind sharing where you purchased this from?

Also where are you tapping in for the AFR Sensor? The car has SSI Heat exchangers going into a Dansk 2 in 1 out, so there isn't a location where both the exhaust gases merge prior to the muffler.

Thoughts?

I guess I don’t have to post mine as katchi has it in post.

The picture is kinda dark, but I'm running an LED oil pressure idiot light around a voltmeter.

replace with GPS Speedo

Chris, I'm digging this one as well. Do you mind sharing more details on the oil pressure light? where you sourced it from, etc?

I like the fact that the voltmeter is VDO, although the AEM AFR gauge on the post above could also be a good option. Just need to learn where to tap the bung into to read the data on a car that has SSI Heat exchangers going into a 2 in 1 out Dansk.

I got the LED ring from this thread.

The VDO gauge is from Amazon. I bought it almost entirely to double-check the cigarette lighter-to-USB thing I bought that has a digital voltmeter on it. The VDO unit reacts slower than the digital guy, but they're generally very close in readings.

I installed the Perfect Tuning gauge. It is available with up to 4 sensors, has multiple display options and warning alarms.
Mine has AFR, Boost/Vac, fuel pressure and Volt. The fuel pressure and AFR made tuning nice.

This is the post from my build thread.

I decided the engine will be waiting on parts now. My plan is to focus on the wiring for the gauge, ignition and turbo cooling system.

After trying to find a good spot for my Perfect Tuning gauge I reluctantly decided to loose the clock.

I disassembled the clock and found the gauge is slightly larger than the inner trim ring. I cut a piece of aluminum to make a ring that pinches the trim ring to the gauge holding it in place. The power wire fits through the light socket.

I thought I was done, but I found without the glass the outer trim did not fit correctly.
I went to TAP’s plastic and got a remnant the same thickness. I cut out a trim ring to fill the gap. This finally gave me a reason to use the Dremel kit the Father in Law got me.

If you have CIS a real time AFR will tell you how the system is working thru out the rpm range...volt meter is nice but not as critical by a long shot.

Search for thread “Custom Quad Combo Gauge” by JBell. I had him make me a dual gauge. Cannot answer questions about the AFR part because my engine is currently out of the car. I will not be able to complete the install until the motor is back in the car and that may be a month or two.

The gauge he sent me looks like Porsche made it. Perfect.

Good luck

I have 2 of these, one works and the other needs to be rebuilt. I may move the clock to the in progress console.

The clock from my 77 is in the clockshop. Got tired of the unwanted vent blowing in my face so I picked up a 90mm quartz clock insert and made my own face. Total of $9 invested.

I swapped out my clock for a afr, a cht, inj pulse, knock, ethanol content, ign timing, tps, map, fuel pressure, boost, lambda feedback, and probably a few others I'm forgetting gauge.
Rather, I installed a CANbus gauge. ;)

Made it on a plotter/cutter with sign vinyl in Signblazer. If you have a photo printer you can just print anything you want on photo paper and center punch it; I have done that in the past.

*The secondhand takes some force to pull, careful not to bend it. You will also need to re-use the original gasket ontop of the included gasket to get it to fit, otherwise wrap it with weatherstripping to create a snug fit.
