Windshield Re-installation: use sealant or not?

After a dash restoration on an 84 3.2, I’m looking to have the original windshield reinstalled along with a new OEM moulding purchased here.

After calling a couple of glass shops, some use some sort of sealant and some not. My thought previously is to not use sealant with new moulding, which is supposed to seal properly on prepped surfaces; but perhaps time has moved on with best practices.

Any thoughts in this forum regarding the proper way to re-install a front windshield?

for the OEM molding, no sealant is required

No sealant. I think some of the later 911's either 964 or 993 require sealant.

Only seal if it leaks. Usually doesn't. Mould some 3M strip caulk in the corners ahead of time so the seal corners don't fall in.

whenever I install Glass/Windschield on a 911 (and on my previous vintage cars) I seal it with a special Teroson sealant all arount.
Using a very small opening on the the tip of the cartridge.
Going around below the lip touching body and going around below seal touching glass.
Especially on the windschield! regardles of using an OEM-Porsche-bought rubber seal.,
Doing so I always had absolute waterproof glass installed.

John, are you putting the strip caulk on the outside edge of glass in the corners to keep the seal pushed towards the body of the car? Or between the seal and body ?

I let the glass shop do this with a seal from the dealer. They get to decide and I hear different pro shops vary in sealant vs. none.

Seal and body. You see a lot of that after the old seal is out. Used to be standard practice. I still do it.

I have been a window (some automotive glass) guy for years and years. Yes, sealant can be an "extra level of protection", but good luck trying to remove anything bedded in sealant. $5.00 says it will never come out in one piece
