Going full manual (windows, locks and mirrors) 1989 doors. Tips & tricks?

Greetings race fans.

In conjunction with my imminent repaint, new interior and recent sunroof delete (and AC delete, and heat delete, and radio delete, and rear seat delete, and...) on my 1989 911, I have decided to continue the theme of simplifying and adding lightness by also deleting the: power windows, door locks and sideview mirrors.

I've always wanted to do this as I'm a 'less is more' kinda guy and I'm a big fan of less complexity / weight / points of failure, etc.

In terms of manual window conversion, I originally saw this, but at $1,167.85 + shipping, felt it was too pricey...

https://www.fvd.net/us-en/FVD54291100/manual-window-retrofit-kit-911-1974-89.html

Then, thanks to @962 and @ARad and this thread...
WTB 89 Speedster drivers side window regulator

...I come to find out that the regulators are available much more affordably. I already have the twelve fasteners needed to mount the regulators, so now all I need are the crank handles. Well, I already have ächtung Kraft's aluminum door handles waiting to go on, so why not add these...

https://achtungkraft.com/products/aluminum-manual-window-crank-handles-porsche-911

So, I think the above covers the manual window conversion. Am I missing anything? Looks like I may also need a pair of rosettes, or two?

Next, to the door locks. I know I'll need to source and install manual door lock latches, with the two ears (for the keyed portion of the door handle to engage with) versus the existing single ear power lock version. Any other tips and tricks for that conversion?

Finally, for the power mirrors, I am sticking with the flag mirrors. I can just delete the door wiring and joystick on the garnish rail. Is there an easy way to delete the motors in the housings? I can just leave them and adjust the mirrors manually. I *may* leave the power mirror functionality intact as deleting the harness and door joystick won't amount to much weight savings.

If you've done these deletes / conversions and have some wisdom to share... I'm all ears.

Thanks.

I think you might also need a new window channel for each side to go with the regulators?

If you remove the power lock solenoid from the door latch/lock assembly, you will find that there is a minor issue with no longer being able to lock the doors manually with the key.

The key in the door handle turns an arm that has a pin on it, when you turn the key in the handle the pin bears upon a few tangs on a doohickey on the door latch. On a pure manual car there are two tangs (one for lock, one for unlock) on the doohickey and on a power lock car there is only one (for unlock).

I solved this on my Rot Rod with a strategically placed zip tie or two. There are probably better ways to do this.

Great looking project!!

You've heard of cancel culture? Welcome to delete days.

Given that the car has fender vents and is one of five '89 M491 / M470 coupes, here's the plate...

By window channel, are you referring to the window frame?

Yes, I'm familiar with the single vs. double tang issue with the door latch. I'll acquire double tang latches for reassembly. Although, I am intrigued about your zip tie workaround! Any more details on that?

Thanks, I'm enjoying having this project...

As an aside, if you have working power door lock components, please let me know as I'd be interested in picking them up and adapting them to my 930. Thanks!

Favorite thread here at the moment. I’ve been working for the past year basically deleting the identical things on my euro 930. Very interested to see this progress and in for more info on the parts/prices.

Holy cow. I completely missed that thread...looking forward to catching up!!!

I think maybe the window "lifter rail" #11 may need to be changed, but that is also a part of conversion from parallel arm to cross arm and vice versa, so maybe you aren't going to have that issue. I'd actually be interested to know since the Rot Rod (an 85) is still electric windows.

FWIW - I took out every unnecessary wire, switch, etc. from the car when I stripped the air and power locks, cruise, auto heat, pad warning sensors, power seat wiring etc. and had a box of scrap wire and switches and lock solenoids that weighed 17 pounds!!!

With electric windows, sunroof, stripped rear interior, rs panels/carpet and lightweight seats it's down around 2335 pounds.

I just sold my 87 G50 Coupe on BaT - sorry to see it go but it was too nice to make a project out of, and starting to be worth enough that I didn't want to drive it or put miles on. The true enthusiasts are getting priced out of certain parts of the market.

Curious - did you actually order a 911.542.041.03 and 911.542.042.03 from the Porsche Store?

Seems too good to be true!!!

I'd love to remove superfluous, or now unnecessary, wiring, but that's beyond the scope of this project. Perhaps in 30 years when I do a complete nut & bolt "restoration." ;-)

I agree on enthusiasts being priced out.

I also agree with one Pelican's tagline... Your classic car owns you, you own your hot rod. I lived this with my '88 M491 cab. 60k miles (I put just over 5k miles on it in just over five years), original paint, excellent condition, that I didn't want to drive / put miles on. I never thought I'd be that guy. I don't want to be that guy, so I sold it...

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-porsche-911-carrera-82/

...in favor of Vents, a project car that I could hot rod.

It does seem too good to be true, but the timing is right as I just gutted the doors in preparation for paint and the new interior is going in this fall, so the door panels haven't been cut yet.

Manual regulators are ordered, they confirmed that the units are, in fact, manual wind units. However, I haven't gotten the shipping confirmation yet. Fingers crossed.

You don't delete options from a car once they're installed. You remove them. You can delete items from the Bill of Materials or Option List before the car's built, but once the car's built, there's no deleting anything, it's all removal work.

Definition of delete, from Merriam Webster Dictionary:

de·lete | \ di-ˈlēt

transitive verb

If you remove a sunroof, you still get wet.

True. And this is exactly why you can't use 'delete', because it takes more than a backspace to remove it. You have to uninstall it.

There are other options available to switch to manual winders.

These neat converters simply replace the motor to allow you to fit a manual crank:

This is MEGA! I'll totally go with these if for whatever reason the manual regulators that I ordered don't materialize. However, these adapters would cost me $525, w VAT, for my relatives in Italy to obtain, plus shipping to the States.

Received the manual window regulators today.

They weigh 4.02 lbs. The stock, power window regulators weigh 3.23 lbs w/o electric motor and 4.87 lbs with electric motor.

That's great! Assume, then, that you've had a chance to check and see if you need anything else or they are all you need for the conversion (aside from cranks)?
