Why both springs
Why are there two springs here? They both act as throttle returns. My cruise control is gone does the upper spring have anything to do with the missing cruise control?

Because that is what the engineers thought was required to allow proper pedal feel/response....

I think you can get whatever throttle feel you want with one spring.
All good systems have two springs in case one of them should break, malfunction, bind up, get jammed with a dirt clod, or disconnect. Two springs are standard on most race cars and the organizations they run with. Even seen sprint cars with throttle return cable to a hand lever in the cockpit. It looked kind of goofy, but you can bet that lever would shut the throttle plate when all else failed. |

Top one is the strong one. Bottom one is more of a back up.
My bottom one was missing as the tiny tab on the bottom of the intake runner it attaches to was broken off, and I never knew there should be one there for a long time…

My buddy has a '75 that only had 1 spring. Long story short, one end of the spring came off the mechanism and when he pressed the throttle it pegged the engine, and the throttle stayed on the floor boards. So one spring was a single point of failure for the whole car.

Two springs it is then! Might be one of those things to look for if you haven’t seen that bottom one in a while.
Thanks |

It is just Belts & Suspenders for possible failure of one.
