Carby harness?
I'm planning on converting my '81 SC from CIS to PMO carbs, and would like to remove all the unnecessary wiring and build a new harness. Generally I just launch into something and figure it out as I go, but since I've got many weeks between now and when my carbs arrive, I figure why not try this newfangled "planning" thing?
1) Is it worth copying the way the old carbureted 911s (-72?) were wired up, or are there improvements to be made? 2) Where do you go to buy new plugs and pins for the harness? 3) Is there a list of plugs and pins needed, preferably with part numbers? (specifically the 6-pin CDI connector and the dizzy wire) 4) What are the differences between the 3-pin CDI box used in the original carb'd cars, and the 6-pin used in my CIS model? 5) What does the temperature switch (930.606.117.00, on both heads, inserted into chain cover) connect to? edit: OEM CDI connector appears to be an Amphenol connector, labeled as obsolete. TE lists a replacement part at $0.82 each with CAD files available. Might consider 3D printing a replacement? Example receptacles from replacement piece at TE are $0.23 each, and take 12-14AWG wire. They look to be fairly standard female spade receptacles, with a mating tab width of 6.35mm (aka, 7mm "hole"). I might even have some laying around. This one was for a 3.0 with electric A/C going in an earlier than SC car with carbs.
But it shows all the essentials you would need. Ignore the Tach signal wire going to the T2 connector, yours would be in the 14 pin. Parts for these harnesses come from researching the PET, mouser, Digikey and others, even some from France and Japan. The special rubber pieces that are NLA I make.

PM me and I could put together a “kit” of the unique connectors, rubber bits terminals etc. I can give you the 14 pin connector part numbers too. The female terminals in it are now $2.62 or more each. The lid and bottom could likely be reused. 999-652-376-12 Is the female contact part number.
Let me know.

A few thoughts on the Matter
Here's a few threads from my conversion:
Wiring info: Engine Harness / Multi-pin Connector for Carb Conversion '83 SC Of note - from my research, timmy2's harness work is impossible to beat for plug & play. I only opted to go my own way to make my project more difficult. Physical install info: PMO 46mm Carburetor Installation on 3.2L I also have a rather lengthy tuning thread in the engine building forum: Gordo's PMO Carb Tuning Good luck, Gordo

And Timmy2, I'm trying to avoid using you for the whole harness. Not because of you or your products, but because I enjoy doing stuff like this myself. That being said, your offer to sell me just the connectors and boots is mighty tempting. When it gets time to start spending moolah, I very well may hit you up. Thanks! |

No worries, I enjoy helping others that want to help themselves.
Be it an entire harness or just some hard to source parts.

Without people like timmy2, Len Cummins and others that I can't think of right now, I am sure there would be a lot less of our cars on the road. These are the people that constantly amaze me with their knowledge and information that is always forthcoming as well as their great products they produce. Both of these guys have helped me with in the past with advise and parts which have kept me on the motoring.

It looks like I need to actually get off my bum and start measuring. I cleaned the oil and gunk off my engine harness today and found this:
![]() Yeah... I'm thinking about not using the 14-pin connector at all. Instead, I can run the reverse lights along the wall, the alternator light and starter wire to a bulkhead connector above the engine, and kinda "hide" the harness in the valley between the carbs instead of having it jut out over the back of the car. Tonight I think I'll look into what the connector for the dizzy is. It looks awful similar to the ones I've got all over my Subaru harnesses, so I imagine it won't be too hard to find online. |
