Engine console saddle crack

Engine’s out for rebuild. This is first point of interest.

Replace or weld? I looked around and for an ‘85 part… these console saddles are not falling off the shelf. Only used one I uncovered was $450 + shipping. Sent photo above to welder. Told him I’d clean crack, was no need to grind scare, and part held an engine. He quoted $150 if I went to shop. $350 if he came to me. Can barely see it in this photo---end of crack spidered out in 3 directions. Drilled all those ends.

Both sides were welded. Not the Rembrandt of all joinings---doesn't matter as I'm thrilled to not not be picking my engine up off the road. 100 grit aluminum oxide (blasted) is seen here. Going to Cerakote this and other engine parts in Black Velvet.

Hey Karl, I don’t know if you remember the history of that motor but I purchased the car (85Targa) from a customer who had lent it to a friend to go to a wedding. Turns out that was a huge mistake and at some point during the night the friend lost control and slammed the right rear into something breaking the trailing arm off completely and tweaking the entire chassis from just behind the rear glass back. OTTOMH I don’t remember when I sold you that engine but it’s been over 7 years since I escaped the sewer (south fla) in 2015 so I am thinking it was around 2008 ? That mount most likely cracked due to the accident, growing longer over time and has probably been like that for a very long time. Not sure how many miles you have put the on the engine since then but I am curious to see what it looks like on the Inside as the mileage IIRC was only 65k. I am sure you will keep us posted as the build progresses. Richard

Yeah, was around then the engine went in. Perhaps a little earlier. 65k is correct. I more than doubled that. Let you know what's on the inside. Think I've mentioned to you how great this powerhouse has been. Never an issue. And I've always liked the 3.2 Motronic set up. Have had engine out a few times and never noticed any damage to any part. Had I, you would have heard from me . Hope all's more than well with you Rich!
