Are there any head stud removers that don’t destroy the threads
I have a 1974 911 and I’m tearing down the engine for a rebuild. the head stud remover set that I bought smashes the threads at the top of the studs I was hoping that I could reuse these original head studs none of them have pulled and none of them have broken so why can’t I reuse them but the only reason now is those top threads have been squashed by the stud remover. Wayne’s book how to rebuild and modify your Porsche 911 engine. Tells to use the Snap On CG 500 with Colette #CG 500–43. That head stud remover is no longer made or sold by Snap On if you can find one on eBay that they may be in an old vintage box set and it’s still hard to find the right size Collett size and the price is anywhere from $200-$400 for the set.
Are there any other head stud remover‘s that do not destroy the threads or chew up the shaft of the studs? Does anybody know any particular brand and or part numbers that are out there that will work without tearing up the threads of the heads studs. Lock 2 nuts on tight and a little heat and you shouldn’t have a problem with destroyed threads.

I just borrowed the snap-on from a friend. My studs were very tight with prior loctite. No way double-nutting would have worked for me.

We remove them with the Snap-On collet style remove shown in the link. Works great.

Concur with Flat6pac. Heat breaks any threadlock. They'll come off with 2 full height locked nuts.

Snap on cg500 is the best!! Doesn’t damage threads and all sizes are available from your local snap on truck. The housing also works for the dowel collets FYI

Just buy the whole metric stud remover and installer set from Snap-On.

The snap on kit is well worth the money. I’ve used it on dozens of engine cases. I hit it with heat for a minute or so if it doesn’t come out easy.

i have Stahlwille stud removal but i used the butane-torch and 2 nuts system as Bruce have mentioned,very simple procedure....

So spend $150 on a stud remover that your going to use once to remove and reuse old studs or buy all new studs??? Hmmmm

i'm not even sure why no one is discussing the using of old head studs during a rebuild. that's akin to going in the shower and putting your old underwear back on.

I have used doubled nut method on some fasteners but it does not work with the head studs on Porsche and Ferrari. They need the collet type remover, plus plenty of heat from a MAPP gas torch.
Your mileage may vary.

Once you've used the Snap-on stud remover, you'll be looking around the garage for more studs to remove. As a DIY guy, I've never purchased a specialty tool for a job and felt like it was a waste of money. These things come in handy down the road.

Hello everyone, Thank you
I got the very useful information that I needed. I’m very glad now to find out that Snap On does have a decent stud remover just like the old one that they don’t make anymore. I will be ordering the CJ 500 housing and the appropriate metric collets that I need to remove the studs. Also I’ll be ordering new head studs for my engine. Thank you everybody for the great advice.
