DIY Alignment - Practical?

Can anyone offer feedback on DIY alignment of your 911?

I was comparing the price of a four-wheel alignment with the camber and toe measurement tools sold by Smart Racing Products and noticed that the tools potentially pay for themselves after roughly 2 alignments. In addition, I to some extent agree with the sentiment often expressed here that few will be as painstaking with your car as you are.

On the other hand, if a DIY'er can't do the job right, then the tools are a false economy.

BTW the car is a 1989 3.2.

I pay $90 every couple of years to have my car aligned so I don't think it would make sense for me to do it myself.

I've posted on this topic before and am of the opinion you can do front toe and camber relatively easily. Front caster....and rear settings are more difficult. In summary, the more common items are easy enough to do.

John, I think a home alignment is not out of the question for a DIY'er. Considering that some chain tire shops have more than likely never touched a 911 before.

Many on the board do it themselves with great results.

this has come up here before many times. Many people here on the board do it them selves. I am going to do mine myself. The most important part is attention to detail. There are lots and lots of methods posted here on the board. You don't actually need either of those tools to do the job. I haven't done mine yet, but I plan to.

If I could afford this setup, I would do my own alignment:

Sherline Alignment
