Video or it didn't happen!!!

I've always wondered why the 911 sunroof opens and closes so fast. It's almost alarming!

What a great piece of work! Too bad I don't have a sunroof. I'd drop a grand or so on one.

Not as of yet - actually not something I have considered. But I'd feel differently if there was a Targa 911 sitting in front of me, I bet!

A very quick google tells me this market is already being serviced by a company called Kaminari are you familiar with their tops?

Of course there's also a neat looking transparent top...

Looks like Kaminari is just a skin ... not a standalone replacement

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/332685-kaminari-targa-top-install.html

the challenge being how to secure the top to the frame otherwise I suppose, can't have it flying off as in the ad !

What transparent top ?

Are you sitting down? Must be a complete solution.

What a thread....I need to go back and start over.

I was thinking the other day that spraying Cerakote on the housing and fan and other parts, and the baking etc, and getting excellent results (not the first few attempts!) was something I should feel pretty good about...
but uhhh....now after reading just the last 3 pages...
I'm not worthy lol
Wow.

I is SO cool to see the quality of work and creativity of some of us (well, you) Porsche DIY types

Don't see the point of a 993 style manual targa top but I'm sure those guys know about the demand better than me.

Watch out if you tackle building some of these, Jonny. These guys mention a "price match" guarantee

Well, $10,999 it is! And I'll throw in a fitted bag

Speaking of hilarious, I posted a couple of videos of me trying to destroy a skid plate but the only thing that was worse for wear after was my foot!

I leave for a few days and all hell breaks loose in here.
I don't regret my FG roof...until you make a CF skin that I could have used instead.

Here I am, still feverishly studying every detail on HM1, flailing away on my own build, and you’re crafing aerospace worthy parts in carbon fiber. Jonny, this is EPIC craftsmanship!

The slope is not slippery; in fact it is entirely frictionless.

Nice work!
A buddy of mine builds CF/kevlar and other parts for Porsche Classic. Every part of the G-body imaginable has been reproduced/improved including the sunroof and the belly pan. Can really appreciate the process as a lot goes into doing it correctly.

Well... you're repainting your car anyway, aren't you?

I do have plans for a cf roof for the Carbon Copy and will be offering them for sale at some point. Quite a ways out though.

However, I quickly looked up the weight of a GT racing FRP roof like yours and it's quoted as 6 pounds... then did a quick calculation of what my cf roof would be based on the construction I've been using and came up with 5.5... so probably not something you need to jump on right away!

Thanks, Evan!

Not sure about aerospace worthy... but that's kinda where I started, worrying mostly about strength, and weight. Cost and looks be damned!

But now I'm constantly thinking about how to make things not just light and strong, but pretty, and more affordable. I guess at some point one of those things is going to have to suffer

The "mini-duck" is in the Queue for production. I've had a few inquiries already and it will be offered for sale soon. I just need to finalize the price and post the ad for it. I've been having too much fun testing skid plates and road testing the sunroof!

EDIT - The mini-duck is a reproduction of a part available from the Auto-motion catalog in the 90's. It mounts to the decklid by sandwiching between the grille and the decklid - will fit F body and G body alike, with no drilling or mods required. One bonus feature of it, which I took advantage of on the Rot Rod, is that it will cover the holes required to mount a Carrera tail, so if you want to de-wing a car without doing bodywork it's a good solution.

Nicely done Jonny. This is similar to the wing I made (fiberglass) for my G body car, only yours is much nicer. Covering the factory holes was my goal too. That opens up being abled to go back and forth for those who might like to revert to a factory tail.

My 72 (under construction) could sure use this when you get around to it. I'll be waiting patiently for your post.

I will be re-painting my car again soon.
But IDK if .5lbs of juice is worth that squeeze.
