Dunno? As of Aug. '92 the factory fill was Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 synthetic which is currently rated SL/CF(back then the rating was SG/CD). Rotella T Synthetic is the latest equivalent currently rated SL/CH. Before that they probably used the dino equivalent. After that they reached a marketing agreement w/ Mobil so factory fills have been Mobil 1 The main criteria beside weight is the S* rating. For a 91 SG or better is needed. Mobil 1 15W-50 works just as well.

My guess is that the factory fill is more of a marketing thing than a performance thing. They probably get a sweet deal on the oil as long as the sticker is there. Chris.

Go to your local Shell gas station.............. I'm sure that $0.89/qt. stuff is just what the doctor ordered for your C2. If you can't stomach the Mobil 1 cost, Castrol & Valvoline dino 20W50 will do you just fine

I have the Shell decal on my '96 993! I thought they were using Mobil 1 by then. I think I may actually buy a Mobil 1 decal to put on there when I switch from Castrol Syntec to M1 next weekend.

I think that the change to M1 occured at or after the end of the '96 production run. If you recall '97 was the year of the famous Mobil sponsored GT1

Kevin, I couldn't agree more. Both those products can be found in my kitchen on any given day.
