Question Binding brake caliper

My right rear caliper is binding on the rotor. Pads are worn down pretty far. Think new pads will keep them from binding? New calipers? Rebiuld? I would think with the new pads, it would push the pistons back in where they would'nt bind? Seemed to work on an old 914 before. (Don't be a 914 hater) By the way, it's a 81' 911 SC.

I would think rebuild the calipers and put new pads in and you should be fine.

Ya know, I don't have any fluid leaking out. I know that is a true sign of a rebuild. But, it does bind? Steve, you are probably right. I will just have to rebuild them. Thanks for the reply.

Excercise your pistons. Take the wheel off, pry the old pads back with channel lock pliers, pump the pedal so that the pistons come back out. repeat 3-4 times. By moving the pads/pistons with the pliers, you can feel if there is any binding. Usually, after 3-4 moves, the pistons feel smooth again. If not, check the tech articles and rebuild. Keep the old pads. I sometimes take pads out that are still good, then use the really worn pads to "excercise" the pistons, then put the good pads back in. With the old pads, I get maximum travel. I also open the bleeder nippels just enough to see a few drops of fluid come out in case there is some air trapped. Measure your rotors for the minimum thickness: ~19mm front, 18.6mm rear, and check for play in the bearings. Cheers.
