If an engine case has been replaced, then automatically it is no longer numbers matching.
If an engine has had work do, especially a full engine rebuild, then take nothing as given. For this car you will need several engine photos, and get part #'s off of the major components. Example, the MFI injection pump has a few numbers, all of which are important. The more the car deviates from original, the lesser the value. You really need someone with the expertise to evaluate the car properly. |
I would appreciate it if someone can help-> I have a 1976 911 vin# 911 630 1689 with engine number 6373208 - 911/81. I'm not sure if the '76 engine has been replaced with a '77 and not sure why the technical spec book states "Starting with 2001 = engine type 930/54 (Turbo model 1977 Japan)

9116301689 is a 1976 911 for ROW (that is not for North America).
6373208 is 911/81 for 1977 ROW The date mismatch definitely means the original engine has been replaced. I can find the original engine #. I don't have the Turbo serial ranges at hand, but that appears to be a split serial range. |
1980 911
Hello, new to the forum. Reviving a thread. Have a new to me 1980 911. It was represented as a Euro car. It has broken head studs and I'm researching what engine and specifically the cam timing adjustment. My Bentley does not seem to cover these engine numbers. Vertically the number is 6300987. The number in the horizontal casting is 930/09. Any information including where to find the actual specs would be appreciated. I hope posting to this thread vs starting a new thread is proper. From the Red book (not always 100% accurate):
1980 911SC, Rest of World version Engine #: 6300001 to 6304831 Matching Chassis Serial #: 91AO130001 to 91AO134831. The 3 is for RoW. 8.6:1 compression ratio 188 hp @ 5,500 RPM 188 f-p torque @ 4,200 Matching Transmissions: Type 915/62 (5 speed) Dave (djpateman) might have more info. |
Thank you. My post had to be approved, so in the mean time I found the cam timing in Bruce Anderson’s book. Height of overlap at TDC is 1.4 to 1.7 mm for the 78 to 80 ROW SC. Plan is to measure prior to tear down. Thanks again. Mark

964 Motor
I have a 964/3.6L motor I bough years ago from this guy that past away shortly after , not sure what year it is,89 or 90.

a 640xxxx serial with a 101.3R case half should be a 1970 2.0 914/6 engine case.

I ask because with respect to timing the owners manual gives one setting for US and another for CA. The gold tag on the engine fan housing only gives a setting 15 ATDC (which happens to be CA). Only reason I can think of is that by 77 all engines conform to CA ? Also the car has a stamp saying non-catalytic car. Any help is much appreciated!

Experts, I am new to this thread, Need help on my engine Stamp on my ROW. (Japan, imported via the UK)
The car is an 78 SC RS/R Homage, the engine stamp on fan support states: 930/25 No stars that I can see: 6181993 also there is some stamp on the under site near the oil pile: J6/911.107.041.00 stamp under the engine stated 830 101 104 5R I am not sure if the engine was replaced in Japan or the UK see photos I have a letter of ORIGIN for the VIN 9118309552 from Porsche UK, that states original engine was 6180055 and gearbox 7180855. Both engine and gearbox replaced with 3.2 and G50. Car was originally Red now Black. I have plenty of history on the car from the service book but its all in Japanese going back to 1978. would like more info on the replacement Engine and Gearbox. Engine 6180002 (930/05, 2 of 304) was fitted in a 1978 Japan 911SC.
The chassis serial # should be between 9118309501 and 9118309804 (911 SC RoW) Of note, there is no Porsche engine serial number that start with a "5" |
