According to the latest Red Book, the chassis is a Karmann, the engine would be type 911/08 US Sporto

Yes, the engine # is a very good match to the VIN. The transmission # is missing a digit (should be 7), and I think would be 7000421. I do not have much data linking VIN's to transmission #'s and the 4 speed (type 911/00 serial 7000001 to 7000691) data is almost non-existent, however, the serial is not inconsistent with the VIN.
BTW, if the Redbook says that a Karmann chassis can only have a 911/08 engine, then the book is less than useless. They only made 227 911/08 engines and there were 4116 Karmann 911T.

The numbers for our '71T Coupe:

Should be type 930/06, if so: 3.0 liter from a 1979 911SC (US California)

Can someone help me with identifying an engine please? I have a 72 Targa which came into the UK from South Africa. I was aware that it wasn't matching numbers when I bought it. Its running on Zeniths and pulls very well. I pulled the motor out to have the gearbox rebuilt so decided to put a clutch in it and fix the normal oil leaks. Anyway it is running alloy heads dated 1/70 - iron cylinders (no idea of age). I was told it was a 2.7 and is registered in the UK as a 2.7. There is no type number in the usual place. There are 2 engine numbers (both the same) - one on the fan tower and one at the rear next to the breather (was concerned that it was a 914 motor when I saw this) - number is 6025445. Understand the 6 is for number of cylinders ( check lol) and the 2 is for 1972. The type number 0 is confusing - any ideas?

Re-check the second digit. Should be either 1, 2, 3 or 5

Rupsol 12-31-2019 08:48 AM

Its definitely 0 JJ - I have checked and re-checked.

To confuse matters more both numbers actually start with a D

Wild guess here, but you may have a factory replacement case. I've never seen a "0" in the second digit location either, but the "D" and the beginning makes me think a replacement. To me, that would make sense as the factory wouldn't know what type of engine would be built using the new case so it's just stamped with a "0".

Is there a * (star) stamped before and after the engine number?

Rupsol 01-01-2020 07:15 AM

no there are no stars

Rupsol 01-01-2020 07:16 AM

there is no type number in the usual place either so agree that likely a replacement case

JJ 911SC 01-01-2020 07:36 AM

Well, the car serial number (10 digits) could tell you if it was for the US market or not.

Rupsol 01-01-2020 01:45 PM

its a South African car imported recently to the UK
