Thanks djpateman. Still waiting for a verification, but assuming they got the numbers right....

One of the motors is complete, the other is just the long block, as I recall.
They both turn over by hand.
Waiting for specific details on which has what, etc.

How do I go about finding a value for these things?

Confused about engine number

Hi, Just inherited a 1976 911S Targa 5speed, car runs great (wonderful sound). I am confused about the engine number. The COA says the engine number should be 6560709 but the number on the block is 'star' 6274359. What do I have?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Jim

JimIndyV8 08-01-2013 09:56 AM

anyone? the VIN is 9116210727. Thanks

1977 type 911/85 for 911S US
it should have been type 911/84 for 911S US Calif.

JimIndyV8 08-02-2013 10:55 AM

Why is the engine number on the COA so much 'higher' then the engine number in the car, the engine in the car being 'newer' (a 1977 vs a 1976). Just trying to understand all this.
Thanks for your reply,
Jim

6560709 vs 6274359
the engine numbers are coded:
6 = 6 cyl 911 engine
5, 2 are engine series numbers for particular years and related to the type #'s
6, 7 are the model years
the last four digits are the serial #
But you have to look up the tables of engine type #'s and serial #'s to fully understand them. You need to study to improve your Porsche education.

G Franklin King 08-08-2013 05:11 PM

Hey guys, what is exactly meant by "matching numbers" I have a chance to get a 65 911 with a vin number of 301100, paint code 6411 and engine number *901197* with 53k miles. Currently the owner is out of town on vacation so I thought I do a little research in the meantime.
I was told that engine and tranny # matched, but upon my brief inspection I could no locate the tranny #, where is it located ?

Thanks in advance,
G. Franklin

Engine # 6380059

Hi i have a 1976 Porsche 911S Vin# 9116200690 Engine# 6380056. Is this engine from a 1978 3 litre Porsche 911?
Thank you

djpateman 08-18-2013 06:57 AM

6380056 is a very early 1978 type 930/03 3 liter for RoW, higher HP than the US engine.

Chassis 11805023
No Engine Number on engine how do i find this out?

Thank you for your help! :D

djpateman 08-30-2013 10:43 AM

Chassis 9113110688 1973 911T Targa
Engine 6131739 2.4 T Engine, and probably original

Chassis 11805023 911L for USA, and very early #23
No Engine Number on engine how do i find this out?
Probably a replacement case; to find original # you will need to contact PCNA.

And an engine i have on the ground 6201088 1970 911E engine originally a 2.2

Southbay356 08-30-2013 11:19 AM

is there a list of casting numbers and how to read them ?

djpateman 08-30-2013 04:32 PM

Are you asking about the casting part #'s that are molded into the parts, or the serial & type #'s that are stamped when the engines are completed? I'm still building my lists in a computer file. There are many books with partial lists.
