Where do I stop?

Getting ready for the 3.6 conversion, 3.0 is gone, and during this time w/ out an engine I’ve been taking things apart to get things ready. I just don’t know where to stop but I need to stop soon.

So far, all the 3.0 wiring I don’t need is out. The transmission is at TRE where Dave and Tyson are working hard to break my budget. Good news is I have limited slip, had no idea until Tyson showed me. Harald said the engine is just waiting for space on a plane and should be here next week.

I ended up buying all new CV joints, bearings flew out of three of the old ones when I took them apart. Replacing the clutch cable, helper spring, TOB fork. Making custom solid aluminum engine mounts. Installing the Seine Systems gate shift. Fitting a C2 deck lid w/ retractable spoiler. Had the Speedo converted to 180 mph and the Tach redone so redline is at 12 o’clock.

I pulled out the seats and rear interior pieces that needed to come out for the 3.6 wiring. That’s turned into tearing out all the carpet, insulation, etc. I’m having all new carpet made up, seats recovered, Targa top re-stretched and a new headliner installed, and I bought a RS door panel kit that I’m having done in matching brown leather.

I have a ton of parts on the way; exhaust, conversion bits & pieces, clutch, etc. The stuff I already have is piling up in the garage; flywheel, RS heat tube, new ABC foil backed engine sound pad, MSDS intake, and of course everything I’ve removed.

I’m really tempted to throw away all the brand new poly bushings and replace it all w/ Elephant Racing bushings but that really needs to wait ‘til the bank account cools off.

Anyway, I’m at the point where I need to stop. I want to have the car back on the road by early October (not that it has to be) and the more I take apart, the longer it will take to go back together. I also don’t know how much more the bank account and my wife can handle (the real reasons).

Is there anything else that I ‘must’ do while it’s in the state it’s in? I don’t want to do anything else right now that I can easily take care of later but don’t want to miss the opportunity if it would be better to do it now. I’m not changing the exterior looks from stock SC. Should make for a nice sleeper when it’s done.

Sounds like you've covered a lot of ground.

There will undoubtedly be a couple of surprises before the end of the journey, though, so I think your instinct to pull in the reins a little is a good one.

You've got the basics covered: suspension, engine, oil cooling, tranny. I don't see any big pieces you've missed.

These projects can get really carried away, or so I'm told.

I've not done one of these conversions but from what I've learned here it seems that the connectors and or harness is a sore spot. You may want to verify and then double, triple verify what you're getting and how it'll fit together. The exhuast is the other potential headache.

Wheel bearings are a great idea, I think I'll order them now.

Brad, if I bought a 993 I would have to start all over. I'll bring my lug nuts and few things to up the ante a bit.

Have you decided on AC? It would be a good time to run new barrier hoses and whathaveyous.

Another idea is to have the car taken to TRE and have the trans and motor mounts moved up a few inches to redistribute the weight forward. Then there are the bigger brakes you'll need with the increased HP . . .

Put the car on a flatbed and take it to TRE so Dave & Tyson can work on me getting divorced? As much as like the idea of having the mounts moved I’d like to keep my wife, I kinda like her.

I’m planning on going w/ the a/c using a belly condenser but that's a project for later. Brakes, yeah I've been thinking about that. That's in the same category as the a/c right now.

At least I didn't suggest an acid dip and new new paint. I guess you can take the pans and pans only so far. BTW, I have had no problems with my OEM SC brakes with vented rotor and brake cool kit.

Is the insulation the way you want it?
Are the rear shocks ok?
You can start on the fuel lines, and wire harness as soon as the parts arrive, Don't throw anything out untill you are done.
Shift lingage/bushes up to spec?
Cleaned and painted everything that will be c/p'ed?

Stop now, you've already gone too far. If the wife is really upset, as a favor I'd be willing to take all those parts and the new engine off your hands in order to save your marriage. yeah I'm a giver

Ryan, you are more than welcome to borrow my wheel bearing race driver set. Makes the fronts a breeze, I also have a bearing grease packer and a home-made rear bearing puller.

You may want to at least consider Carrera rotors and calipers up front, although, sounds like Pauls brakes are fine.

Don’t get the wrong idea guys, my wife has been awesome about this whole thing. Of course every time I do a project she asked if this is the last one. I don’t admit to any other future plans but she knows better.

And yes Paul, pots & pans can only go so far, I’m starting to get nervous about how she might retaliate.

Bill, shocks are new, shift linkage has all new bushings, insulation is history, fuel lines and wire harness will be made up when I get the parts that Harald is sending. I didn’t understand “Cleaned and painted everything that will be c/p'ed?” but I’m cleaning and/or painting everything accessible.

Then the only other upgrade is to get it out to Willow Springs so you can scare yourself a little bit.
