As some here may know, I sold my '72 T w/ short stroked 3.2 MFI motor, that I had worked on for a few years, to a fine fellow at one of the better Porsche shops here in San Diego. So sorry to see it go, but life sometimes dictates such.
I have been thinking, ever since, about my next project since I may now be able to approach (read "fund") such a project. I think I will look for a G50 based 87-89 Cabrio to build upon. 1) Backdate the Cabrio to a '72; all chrome trim, rockers, rear view mirrors, bumpers, lights and a '72 oil fill door on the passenger rear flank; 2) Polished paddle Fuchs and rubber to fill the wells; 3) Twin turbo (993?) motor and twin intercoolers . . . with no tail (very important issue!) Q: Can the i-coolers fit at the side of the motor above the rear wheel wells with a Ruf Yellowbirdesque NACA duct above said wells? I am very resolute re the "no tail" issue and was wondering if there is any possible way to do this?? This will be a street only car. Suspension mods will be needed but nothing radical. I think a "simple" Big Red conversion will do the trick re brakes. The G50 should be up to the power and gearing should be fine. I think this project needs mucho aesthetic work (and some body work) and a lot of engine/intercooler placement "work". So, can this be done or am I dreaming once again? TIA! I've seen custom intercoolers that fit under a ducktail. And of course, you can add an aftermarket turbocharger to a n/a motor without an intercooler.
But I don't know much about turbocharging. Maybe if you cut back the boost?

Clamshell would be cool . . . but I need to be able to strap a child booster for my almost 5 year old daughter in the back "monkey" seats.
![]() Jack: I want to use a relatively stock 993TT motor, but mod the large intercooler to a dual cooler set-up, i.e one cooler for each turbo ala 959. I am really curious if any room can be created at each side of the motor knowing that it would probably require expanding the engine compartment area and entering the rear wheel wells . . . If a duck had to be utilized b/c all options for twin ics had been exhausted (pardon the pun), guess I would go that route. Still pondering and thanks for the input . . . BR, Kurt |

Well, RUF did it, so it must be "doable" - moving the oil tank would be mandatory, and I would expect all the electrical stuff on the drivers side would have to go too.
How wide are you willing to go on the rear flares? I assume just Carrera standard. Does the 993TT engine (and more importantly turbo) setup impede where you would put the intercoolers? Is a 993TT engine compatible with '87-89 suspension and a narrow body (I don't see why not).

Here is a pic:
from this thread: Ultimate RUF Conversion Thread I reckon it would be outstanding to have a sleeper like you plan. I like sleepers ![]() Hmmm, kept looking around. Seems the CTR2 (993 based?) also bunged the intercoolers back there (albeit in much wider flares): ![]()

Since you're thinking of dumping the factory IC, why not swapping it for a air-water IC (or two) with the water radiator up front ....
err, actually i was thinking of a rs-backdate, with the oil-cooler opening, so you would still need an opening somewhere for the rad... Anyway, if you're going for the "sleeper" look, try to investigate later-models ctr1's, I read somewhere that RUF eventually gave up on the NACA ducts by ducting the air from *below* the car, in front of the back wheels... He claimed this also helped reduce lift since it removed air from below the car ,which exited, after his IC's through the engine cover... |

I think the side ducts were determined to be ineffective. Of course, Porsche found a way to position them that (apparently) works on the Turbo and Boxster.

Thanks for the help guys - the Ruf thread was a great help.
Looks like the project is possible, but like every project "things" pop up that add to the bottom line. I think the '72 oil tank location may work with a i-cooler - and the bonus of the filler door there is great. I want to create a car that is identical to a '72 S on the exterior which, as we know, can be done with a late '80s Carrera . . . er, except that it will be a Cab! ![]() And, black on black or silver w/ red interior will be the preferred choices. Also, I will look further into air intake below the car for the coolers. Maybe a couple of large fans to cool the intake charge and suck the car to the ground would be "helpful". ![]() I'll keep you folks apprised if I figure out a way to do this and stay married! Is John Walker's still available? Maybe not a G-50 - but he did the turbo didn't he?
