996 front calipers

I would like to have some info about 996 front calipers. Do they have big reds ??

Bill Verburg´s excelent brake pages dont list 996 calipers. I suppose 996 calipers are not THE big reds, but are they same as in some other late model 911 ??

I do know that 996 calipers/rotors have to have 17" wheels - you can't get 16" wheels on over them. Have you considered Boxster calipers? They're not quite as big as 996 calipers, but I would say that they have about 90% of the stopping force.

Do Boxter calipers fit 97-89 Carrera's? How and what kind of mods do you have to do to get them to fit?

I don't know if they fit, it's just that I think you'd have an easier time fitting Boxster brakes than 996 brakes.

I do, however, recall someone on the Board fitting Boxster brakes to an SC, so I'm sure it can be done on the late model 3.2s. Try a search for "Boxster calipers".

EDIT: Here's a good thread.

here are some 996 specs
front pistons 40/36
rear pistons 30/28

total pad area 450cm2

front pad area 254cm2
rear pad area 196cm2
front pad thickness 12mm
rear pad thickness 10.5mm
front rotor 318x28mm
rear rotor 299x24mm
the same setup is used on Boxster S

The 318mm rotor will require a 17" wheel, if a smaller rotor is used then 16" rims cam be used

I know that Boxster brakes are getting popular because of their price. I think all four calipers can be had for well under $1k. Fordahl Motorsports is working on a conversion kit, since they are getting so popular with the 914 crowd.

The normal Boxster front calipers are popular upgrades because they fit in 15" wheels and use the 24mm Carrera front rotor and stock Carrera rears w/o a p/v.

This upgrade is only a marginal improvement on Carrera brakes.

I guess my next dumb question is are they a bolt on item or do they need to be modified to fit a 87-89 Carrera?

Thanks Jeff, but I will try to find them a little closer to me, first from Europe.

Your 996 calipers are red, right ?? I have thought they are all silver. This is why I would like to see pics about them. Is there any other differences between the red and silver ones than color ??

Boxster brakes on an SC

I put a full set of boxster calibers and carrera cross-drilled rotors on my 82 SC. As Bill said, the braking is only slightly improved. My cost:
4 Boxster calipers and rotors: $550.00 (Ebay)
4 Cross-drilled rotors: $300.00
Pads all-round: $125.00
Caliper adapters from TRE motorsports: $400.00
Sold Boxster rotors: $150.00

Net cost is about: $1275

Oh forgot $30 for red caliper paint and $5 for Porche stencils

They need a set of adapter brackets to fit the strut of earlier cars.

The biggest issue w/ any of these upgrades is rotors

The 996 front calipers(aks Boxster front) will want a 28mm thick rotor. It is possible to do as Chris Streit has done on his race car(sourced by VCI). But it is not common.

The Boxster kits are used w/ the 24mm Carrera rotors

The best choices are the 32mm 930 or 993tt rotors which need a different set of calipers(thought many of the smaller ones can be made to work on them) and wheels(usually).

I am still wondering what is the difference between black, silver and red 966 calipers? Are there any other differences than color.

I have a possibility to choice black or silver.
