How do I remove the fan?

Hi Pelicans,

Due to terrible corrossion I'd like to remove my fan and give it a good polish. Can someone tell me how to do this? Is it as easy as just to remove the nut that holds the fanbelt and then pull the fan out of the housing unit?

Thanks so far,

On my 85 Carrera the fan is on a keyed alternator shaft and came off in my hands when I removed the pully. I believe that some are on a tapered alt. shaft and if you will post the year and model of your engine I am sure more knowledgeable people wiil chime in on your specific application.

You need to remove the fan housing bolt that shrouds the fan, it looks like a big metal band around the fan, next remove the nut in the middle of the fan. I had to use a big metal pipe on the end of my ratchet to break this bolt, as the engine is constantly tensioning this bolt. After this is loose you will need to carefully pull out the fan as the alternator is connected to the back of it...by wires that you will need to reconnect. That is at least how I remember it, oh and your fan belt will come off when you release the tension on the fan center bolt. Good luck!

I used a puller to remove my fan. The puller worked great.

Hi Don,

Did you do this on the car without removing the housing, and how did you put it back on?
