I hope so, I probably could have gone another 50k miles w/ the old seal if I hadn't changed it, oh well. Thanks Harald!

Thanks to Jim’s (Superman) poking and prodding about making sure it’s the flywheel seal before I go through all the work to pull the engine back out, I cranked it up earlier tonight and got under there to check it out. Yep, it coming right out of the bell housing alright. Thanks Jim for pressing that, I feel much better now that I saw it for sure, or is it that I feel worse?

Man this sucks! Just running it for the two minutes it took to check reminded me how fun it is to drive. And it sounds Awesome!

Ryan I had a sachs power clutch before i installed the 3.6, so i just took the disc down to my local clutch shop and had it recovered, they put a racing compound on it and its tons better then the sachs material, 75 bucks, Kevin

Ryan, sorry I missed out. I would have much rather installed a motor than yacking for a week and feeling like cr@p. Sort of strange that everyone left before you took it for a drive, humm?

I installed the FW seal just as Ingo described. No oil or sealant on the outside of seal, but on the inner portion. The barbs keep the seal in place. I remember when I was changing out the seals on my motor. I kept thinking, "Do I really want to remove a seal that's working?" Sort of a a catch 22, damned if you do, damned if you don't. Should be an easy fix, just a pain in the a$$. Just a minor hiccup in the building of the beast. It's going to be much harder to keep up on BBIV. BTW, I finally found the CD Roms I promised you months ago a couple days ago. Do you still need them?

I don’t think it’s a done deal yet, I did use a smiley wink.

Of course if you want a J/K I can quote it again…

Seriously Frank, you are doing exactly what I wanted to do w/ that 3.0. I was still undecided about the 98mm P&C to make it a 3.2 but I’m sure you will be thrilled when you finally get to drive that sucker.

Paul, we’ll work it out the next time we get together. After I’m up and running again I’m sure I’ll be up for a drive down to Newport.

I considered that! I figured that as long as I pulled over every 4.3 miles and threw in a couple quarts I’d be good to go.

For the guys going to WSIR tomorrow, looks like I’ll see you there after all, details later.

Update

Jack emailed me after hearing about my seal problem and suggested that I come out to WSIR to check it out and get a ride along. Tuesday night I met Dan, Brad, and Ingo in Lancaster and they put me up for the night so I could go out to WSIR w/ them first thing Wednesday morning. I got to hang out w/ them and Jack was kind enough to take my hand and explain the how things work.

Before I knew it, I was strapping into BBII and heading out to the track. What a ride! Jack is a talker on the track, he talked about every turn; braking points, entry, exit, and pointing here & there while flying around the track. I engaged him in conversation for about the first 10 min of the 30 min session, and then it turned into a 20 min monolog. He noticed the silence and asked if I was ok and I was, but I really had to concentrate to not just stare in front of the car.

I think 30 min in the passenger seat of BBII is about all I could take and I walked a little light for the next 30 min. I was going to stick around for another ride later but couldn’t stop thinking about my car and I wanted to get home at a decent hour to work on it.

So, for the update part of this long post, the engine is OUT! Sure enough, the seal was popped out. It looks perfect and I could probably just clean it up and put it back in but to be on the safe side I’ll wait ‘til I get the new one. The great news is that my clutch was dry as a bone, that was a score.

Now it’s time to clean it up and wait for the new seal to arrive on the door step. I have to work this weekend but if I can get the seal by Friday I might be able to install it Sunday night, we’ll see.

Great news Ryan!
I know exactly how you feel to fire it up and have dino oil going everywhere... I was in your shoes once.

Also, have we decided on a place for the '04 Roundup?
As soon as we know I'm putting in for leave!

That is good news, but you'd better figure out what went wrong. Rear main seals do not just "pop out", something was very not right. Just hate to see it happen again. Good luck!
