How to remove windshield sealant

The windshield on my '83 targa has been replace once, using the original gasket. It looked awful. I have it out now, and a new gasket ready to go in. However, I am having a tough time getting the windshield frame clean. The techs used a hard black material to seal the space between the old gasket and the windshield frame. I think that it's the urethane material which is used to fasten a lot of new windshields in place. It's hard, and murder to remove! Gripping it with pliers and twisting works best, where there's enough of the stuff to get a grip on. I've been trying to work with a razor in the other spots, but it's difficult to do without the occasional nick to the paint. Plus, it takes forever. Any suggestions? (I looked on glasslinks.com, and the best advice there seemed to be either Loctite mirror primer or the razor trick. Both methods are acknowledged to be potentially rough on the paint.)

One bright spot is that the windshield frame is absolutely spotless - no rust anywhere. So, I guess that the urethane stuff seals well.

I used 3M adhesive remover on the door seal of my 88 coupe. Not sure it would work but its worth a try I suppose.

it has to be carved out. i use a narrow wood chisel and a sharp pocket knife. keep it under control, or you could slip and gouge the paint, or yourself. not necessarily in order of importance. finish up with 3M adhesive remover.
