Floating Rotor Question
I'm currently investigating a brake setup for my 80 911 that was recommended to me. 993 front calipers /w floating rotors + 965 rear calipers /w 930 rotors. I'll also need a 23mm M/C.
Calipers I can obviously find used and in good shape, the 23mm M/C I can find used and in good shape, the 930 rotors are expensive as are the floating rotors to replace but I can't get over the price of the floating rotor hats ($400). Is there anywhere I can find a used set of these? Are the ones sold in the aftermarket really more durable than the factory floating 930 rotors and last but not least, are floating units really going to worth all this money? Adam

The cost difference between floating and fixed rotors isn't that great...maybe $100. If you track your car a lot, you'll probably want floating rotors...if not, I understand that fixed rotors are a better choice (quieter). Good rotors are worth the extra money. You'll need a custom setup for the front, hence the extra cost. I think my custom front Brembo's with Rennsport hats were 750 for the pair. Also, why install a used Master Cylinder of questionable integrity? New ones are about $130. These are your brakes. Not the place to cut costs IMHO.

Agreed on the used MC, not really looking to 'cut' costs persay, just trying to keep within budget.
The above listed calipers should just bolt on if i'm not mistaken, correct?

Not sure. I know that 930 rear calipers require machining to fit, so I'd guess that yours do to, but that's just a guess. Take a look at www.vehiclecraft.com. I'll bet you'll find many answers to your questions. Another option is to call Steve Weiner at Rennsport. No one knows this stuff better than he does.

I got the following quote for brake parts for a brake conversion on an early car using 944T brakes
The cost of the rotors and adapters is as follows. Adapters $44.95 ea 12.19" H/D 48 fin curved vane rotor $67.95 ea 12.19" U/L 32 fin curved vane rotor $46.95 ea 11.75" H/D 48 fin curved vane rotor $67.95 ea 11.75" U/L 32 fin curved vane rotor $44.95 ea Hardware $19.95 (For 2 rotors) $400 for a hat is a rip off, I believe thats Porsche replacement price, you can get custom hats made for a fraction of that. The cost of the discs I was quoted are for Wilwood discs.

The custom hats are from VCI
The replacement rotors are $250 each and the hats are $385. These are supposedly 'more durable than O.E.'. Purchased individually these parts are $885 but they are sold as a combo for $799. Add the price of calipers to that (??? Used) and the adapters $225 from the same company and you're getting into Big Red territory. Does anyone have any other sources for these parts? I'm thinking I can save by getting some floating rotor hats from a 78-80 turbo. Adam

For track use the floaters are worth it, for street not.
Not all rotors are created equal, do your hw. Not all floating systems are interchangeable do your hw there are no 1 piece rotors in the appropriate size and o/s for use w/ narrow SC/Carrera front fenders Best price I have seen for the oem 78-80 930 front rotors is ~$300ea, hats are extra and nla from Porsche, aftermarket versions are available the 1 piece are heavy and you really don't want to use them any way.

The cheapest place for hats that I found was Powertech in NJ. If you want to keep your Fuchs I don't think you can go with Big Reds. You will spend at least $2700 to fit 930 brakes to your car. Unless you are given some stuff

The master cylinder is not the place to economize. You knew that, you were just trying to bait us into responding weren't you? Clever. ![]() I have the 993 front calipers with the VCI floating rotor setup and 930 brakes in the rear. The VCI supplied Coleman floating rotors wore out pretty quick IMO. I replaced them with factory rotors which seemed to be wearing better but I didn't measure them. I found the 993 front brakes wouldn'tt fit under 6 or 7x16 911 Fuchs but would (barely) fit under 7x16 944 Fuchs. The 930 rear brakes would fit under 9x16 Fuchs fine. There were very close under 8x16's I think, my memory is fuzzy on that. In short, if you have normal Fuchs now, add wheels to your budget. If you upgrade to wheels that the 993 calipers will fit in, you might as well get Big Reds - they're actually cheaper I think. If I was doing it all again I would go with the Big Reds. The pads are more expensive but everything else is cheaper or the same price. I also might have kept my 944 7x16 and 9x16's just to mess with people's heads who "know" that Big Reds won't fit under those wheels. ![]() -Chris

Yes, there is the 1 piece 965/993tt(322x32mm) which can be used w/ modified hubs. But that is a poor second choice to the 2 piece 322x32 w/ aluminim hat versions due to weight and thermal transfer considerations. The last knock on the 322s is that you need 17" rims to use them. Yes, I have seen the machined down versions in 16" wheels, that doesn't count. The width also requires the additional clearance axially that is usually only provided by 8" wide(or greater) modular wheels.
