Where can you find the key code.
1977 911S. My ignition key got quite worn out. Got a key made
while at German autofest two years ago. Worked fine until it started to 'won't catch to turn starter', it will just free turn all the way without catching at the end of accessary point. It will catch once every five attempts Went to the locksmith and explained my situation. He needs my 'key code' to cut a new one. Does the Vin # or chasis # have a hidden #? Or does the face of the lock, behind the 2" dia pad, have a number? |

I could swear I have a card with my code but thats for an '85. Most dealerships can cut a key (or order) from your Vin. I've also heard that the code is on the locks themselves.

I lost my black key and only have the valet now. I called the Porsche dealer about making one from the vin. He said I have to have the key code from the card that came with the car. Well, I don't have it, so I guess the next step is to have all the friggin locks rekeyed - bout $300. Anybody know if the dealer is right?

JW's on the right track---Steering lock issue.
Your key is probably fine, but if it spins in the lock, that's where the problem is. For new keys on older Porsches: Any locksmith can dupe off a key using the glove compartment lock, door locks or hood locks. Same key fits the ignition. Good luck finding a key code for a '77.

I had a key made at a local dealer and it did not work. Key cost 70 bucks. From vin by the way. Now that could be the locks had been changed already. The key I have does not unlock hood or glove box.

Dealer with VIN
I had a master key made for my '83 by providing the VIN to a dealer. Works great with no problems, even let me lock the glovebox and trunk. I provided the dealy my VIN and proof of ownership, within 3 days they had the key. I think it cost around $70.
I would look into what JW is talking about prior to laying down any money for a new key unless you are sure it's a key problem. Gordo

The Valet key is only suppose to work on the ingnition and door. Not the glove box or trunk(hood), hence the term Valet.
If you're going to dupe a key it should be the NON-Valet key so you can use it on all the locks. Don't remember which color though. When I bought my car the PO only had one key that fit the doors & ignition only (black). I redid the tumblers on the glove and hood locks as per Wayne's 101 book. Now the one key works on all the locks. I can get this key duped off at any hardware store for $5. Remember this is on a '77. Doubt that this will work on newer cars. I don't need no stinkin' Valet key ! Would never let them park my car anyway. But I tip them anyway and they keep an eye on it.
