The first kit looks wrong - the wheelbase is just too short. The second car looks wrong - the whole car is too short.

The real GT1 is beautiful in its own racer way, IMO. I saw them race at Le Mans in 1997 - both GT1s retired, Joest won with an open Porsche-engined prototype despite being denied parts or assistance by the factory - and the GT1s were stunning. They won the next year, of course.

Even if you don't like the looks of the GT1, you can't deny the significance of the car. The GT1 represents the - last - time - Porsche - won - Le - Mans - sob - [turns away]

Not in this body style tho'... the GT1 EVO was the best version of the car in my opinion. Harken'd back the Can Am/917 racer days. Great car... Very fast.

BTW the original posted car looks like *****. The Petrini (sp?) TT is really sweet!!! Great rear shot.

Owners of 914/4's should consider converting your 4 banger to a 911 six, with the looks and styling of this body kit, you will want the performance to match it
yeah right, as if any of the stock six bangers has the performance of the GT1 to match the looks of a GT1

Are there any websites out there that have info on the real GT1? Cutaway diagrams? Development story? Racing history? Engine and chassis pics? It seems like the 917 is the star of the Porsche world while the GT1 is relatively ignored. I googled "porsche GT1" and found surprisingly little info.

Like most modern day race cars, their competitive life span is short. The GT1, after a year, was outclassed by its replacement. As I remember, private customers, who received their GT1 a year later, weren't too happy with their lack of competitive speed.

Back in the days of the 917, there weren't too many international players outside of Ferrari, and only McClaren and Lola in the CanAm series.

I hope I'm not beating a dead kitcar by reviving this thread but...I stumbled upon some specs on the 911, 914, boxster, and GT1 and figured I'd share them for comparison....

I couldn't help but notice that the kitcar GT1 looked like the rear wheels were set too far forward in the body. And now I may have a clue why. It seems the wheelbase on a standard 74-89 911 is something like 2271mm. But the wheelbase on the GT1 was a full 2870mm. That converts to roughly two feet longer for the GT1 wheelbase. YOUCH !! So if the kit was even roughly sized correctly to the GT1, then the 911 would be dwarfed underneath it. Even a 914 has a wheel base of just (I think) 2449m (and the boxster is just 2413mm) - but at least you'd have the motor in the correct location. So unless you are willing to somehow streeeetch the frame of a production porsche, which seems like a really nutty plan, then your GT1 kitcar will almost certainly look awkward at best. Or somebody with welding skills could build a tubular frame like the guy who built the 910 in Excellence. But that seems really hard.

Nothing against kit cars. I'd gladly try a GT1 if it were feasible. But this seems to be a "Kit Too Far".

Good observation Janus.

The builder should have noticed this too and replicated the body so it proportionally fit the chassis wheelbase instead of blindly keeping the same dimensions and made the wheel wells openings wherever they happened to be. Nothing says a knockoff kit has to be exactly like the original car. Look at the new Ford GT. Lots of different skill sets necessary to be a succesful kit builder.

Somebody made a comment about "bling" (maybe not). If the GT1 isn't bling, I don't know what is. In this case, I'll define bling as attention-getting rather than ostentatious decoration.

svandamme,
If your Targa gets as much attention as a GT1, I congratulate you and your car. Out where I live, Pcars are a dime a dozen. Mini Coopers get more looks; or maybe its just my car.

i'm not saying mine get's that much attention as a GT1
but it does get attention, old 911's aren't rare over here, but they surely are not a dime in a dozen.

but according to your (re-)definition of the term bling, mine would fall in this category.
maybe not bling bling bling, but still bling because it does attracts some attention.

the word bling comes from the rapsters you guys have running loose, the sort that wears diamonds on one finger worth more than our average P-cars cost, it does mean over the top decoration, something without any function other than decoration.

the word for the GT1 would be exotic, since i doubt there is much to find on a GT1 that doesn't have function in a fast car, like cup holders of plasma dvd playstation crap. or diamond spinning rimms
