Rear jackstand location while doing suspension work?
Searching the archives didn't turn up any info here...
Where do people usually put rear jack stands when they are doing work on the suspension, and can't put them on the torsion bar covers?

You can put them on the inboard sections of the torsion bar tube (closer in toward the transmission). About 10" or so in from the covers.

I like to use the corners of the tub where a garage lift would pick. Place wood blocks atop the stands.

OK, Bill, I just have to ask -- esp. because of the recent thread and your post -- what's the deal on those wheels?

The deal is they were the biggest/lightest combination available at the time of purchase, 17x8 235/45 & 17x9.5 275/40

I don't know about those later cars, but I've only got pretty flexible thin sheet metal where it looks like those jackstands are.
Right now I've got them on the inboard side of the rear torsion tubes near the transmission mounts, and just ahead of the front torsion bar bracket in the front. Seems to be stable.

The corners of the tub are very strong. That is where a shop lift picks from.

Official Porsche dealership lifts built after the 1969 Porsche-Audi joint venture used flip-up pickups which lifted just inboard of the torsion bar bushing housing ... bearing directly on the torsion bar tubes with a crescent-shaped notch, outboard as far as possible. That same position is where I have always advocated putting jack stands for brake or suspension work!

Gon fix it with me hammer
|
mine has damage from the PO who obviously jacked it up on the corners of the tub.
the joining of the floorpan and the rocker panel is flattened and because of the stress on the corners, the middle section kinda folded open enter a rust spot.... my vote is on the torsion bar tubes and the right sort of axle stand

Corners of tub is the correct area if you look at the factory manuals or even your owners manual. Look also at Bruce Andersons Performance handbook and note where the small pads were welded-on by the factory in the back for the 87+ models. Same place for the earlier cars....roundish portion of the upward bend of the tub in the back, and close to the botom seam whee the front wheel well kicks up...might even crush the seam slightly on the front locations.

I have numerous pads like this one for lifting on a seam, should that be necessary, rarely is except on Audis

Unless this is an old picture it appears Mr. Verburg is missing 3.8 liters of horizontally opposed fun?
