Whats the going rate for engine rebuilds ?

Whats the going rate for a SC 3.0 or the Carrera 3.2 if someone was going to sell it out right?

1. If you drop off your car, and come back 8 weeks later to collect it, count on $8-$10K for a rebuild.

2. If you drop off the engine, come back 4 weeks later to pick it up, count on $6-$8K for a rebuild.

3. If you do all the labor work yourself, and job out the machine work, count on $3-$5K for parts, and machine work, and incidentals for a full rebuild.

4. If you do all the labor and cut a lot of corners (something you shouldn't do), you can get a "rebuild" for $2K but I am not sure how good that rebuild is going to last.

I didn't buy a rebuilt motor but I just bought a 89' 3.2L with 75K miles from a fellow Pelicanite. It's a stock 3.2L but has a Autothority MAF installed along with new sachs clutch and Kennedy Engineering pressure plate.
If you're interested in what I paid, send me a PM.

This add appears on the Northeast PCA Mart. This is a professional rebuild..... Maybe the engine is still available.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "rebuilt." Are we talking about top end? new P&Cs? Re-ring? Split case? Lots of machine work? Valve job? Head-studs? New oil pump? As others have noted a full rebuild can cost big bucks...but for 3.2 or SC engines a full rebuild might not be needed....and would depend on the condition of the motor...and this isn't known until you get in there. So without an engine's history and what has been done to it, it is hard to value. Someone once advised me, if the motor doesn't have a history or paperwork from a reputable shop, assume that it is a core. If you're buying a used SC motor (20 years old now) even with "low miles" those head studs can snap at any time! What kind of cylinders are in there? I'd pay more for an SC motor with nikasil cylinders. Finally always ask what is included....rusty heat exchangers vs. SSI would make a difference to me too. OK, I'm rambling again...but when your spending several thousand to ten thousand on a motor there are questions that should be asked IMHO.

this is an interesting topic. it would be great to know what the "actual" costs of an engine rebuild costs by a shop vs a rebuild done by the DIYer.i'm talking about final figures of completed rebuilds listing the extent of the work.
i am considering buying a 2.7S core engine to rebuild myself over the course of a year. however i can't help but wonder about just buying a rebuilt 2.7.
should start a new thread.

I did a 3.0 rebuild myself for about $6500 including new P&C's, and machine work (race balanced). I was quoted around $12K for a shop to do it and guarantee the work.

Motor Meister quotes $4000 but you can count on at least $6 to $7 not including new anything.

If anyone is interested I will post my actual total cost, broken down into sections for the rebuild I am presently doing myself.

Frank, now where's this going? I'm kind of scared here Frank, we had you looking at a perfectly nice Targa, and I get on here tonight expecting to see a thread saying you bought the car and see this? Come on, just tell me you bought the SC Targa, and want to know how much upgrading to a 3.2 or 3.6 would run........Frank.........Frank?

It's my understanding that if a prospective buyer pays for a PPI, HE owns it. Not the seller. Why did he "keep the original"? As you said bro' YOU paid for that PPI, not him.

Somebody else chime in here!

Well..I think we're all as confused as you.

But on the bright side, it only took me 1 week to find my car, check out my car, and buy my car. If I had known what I know now, I'd have actually bought the car even quicker!

no i agree, but the seller paid for it and then i repaid him for it, the whole thing was screwy, when he took the car to stuttgart. I mean i called them and told them i was paying for the PPI, they took my information down etc. Never called me back on it. I guess the seller had a talk and said he would pay for it, but i should have gotten the orignal not a copy...i will wait to see what happens but i have a feeling its not good
