Help Getting Axle In

I took both axles off to repack cv's and am having trouble getting back in. The passengers side went in fairly easy. I can't get the drivers side to fall into place. I have the shock disconnected and have tried raising the control arm with no luck. Is there a trick?

John

If you grab the passengers side axle you are able to move the axle shaft back and forth consistently within the two cv joints as designed. The drivers side is rock solid and there is no movement of the axle shaft or flexibility of the cv joint. I rechecked assembly and everything seems in order. I can't see how a failing cv or axle would cause this to happen. ??????????

I think you may have re-assembled the CV joint incorrectly. If the grooves (or what ever you call the slots where the ball ride) are incorrectly matched, it will have no movement.

I've taken everything apart again and reassembled. I even flipped the outer ring to see if by chance it was backwards. For simplicity, the cv is made up of three basic components. There is an inner ring which is attached to the axle end, and middle ring which houses the 6 bearings, and an outring. I tilt the middle ring about 30 degrees and them slide on the outer ring at an opposite 45 degrees. Once in place the middle ring can move in and out a little, but the outer ring is solid. It doesn't seem to have the flexibility needed to handle the upward and downward movement of the wheel and axle. This is why I can't get it to conform to the angles needed at the wheel and tranny to get into place.

It's messy but basically very easy, other than this issue. They were 1/2 off for the engine drop so it just made sense. Still frustrated though.

Got it. I slid e outer ring off and rotated it one slot over. Once back on it rotates like crazy. Thanks for the help.
