What is the estimated HP gain using K&N cone filter and adapter intake on 3.2L?

I wondered if the K&N cone filter and adapter intake will add any noticeable HP gain in a stock 3.2L. If it does make a difference does it occur at the higher RPM's and how much?

That's what I thought, but doesn't Steve Wong make allowances for such modifications when 'chipping'?

Is it with an e-ram or without?

No E-ram --> -2
With E-ram --> -20

Extrude honing and overbored throttle bodies yes, air filters probably not...

The intake (lead-in) to the mass airflow box has a cast aluminum transition that adapts the cone filter to the box. The shape resembles an intake port, large 3" dia. opening transitioning to the retangular opening of the airflow box. It would seem that the adapter would promote better airflow than the stock box. Is that the case?

Are the cone filter/adapers sold on pelican? I searched and didn't see them. I suppose the posts claiming that they let in dirt scare me a bit... regardless of the hp, I really like how it cleans up the engine bay.

Depends on the level of hp your engine produces. At 220 hp, probably nil, over 250-260 hp, Bruce Anderson said they cut open the airbox cover and gained about 5 hp at the top end. That said I am guilty of a cone filter with my air flow sensor. My engine probably produces around 250hp and my tests were limited to comparing a grossly mismatched cone filter and cheap $5 adapter from Autozone, and another that was a well matched aluminum adapter with filter I heavily modified and reshaped internally like a big mouth velocity stack. The difference in air fuel ratio was such that the matched filter setup required about 1-1.5% more fuel to maintain the same afr. It is negligible and not something I usually account for in chips, as the variation in flow characteristic from one Carrera engine to the next is much greater than that. Cool air and if you use a cone filter, a properly shaped/matched adapter are most important to max power.

FWIW, why do it if you're not going to get the filter out under the grill where the cool fresh air is? It's easy if you're creative with some pvc.

Not sure I can argue with what everyone says about power but it sure does make for a clean engine compartment. Check out my 3.2 with a/c and stock box vs. the non air, k&N.

As has been mentioned the final nail is that the K&N pulls air from the rear(hottest) part of the engine compartment.

hold a K&N filter up to the light, and think about how much dirt would go thru it as you travelled along a dirt road.

Wait a minute, the adapter I'm talking about makes a right angle turn towards the rear, exposing the filter to the incomming air going to engine fan. That should make a difference compaired to the one shown in the previous response, lower temp. Only problem is the filter gets wet when it rains or the car is washed.

Pretty much like the stock airbox. (My filter extends to the same position as the airbox intake)

Nothing. It lets more dirt into engine though.

Huh? Every stock air box I have ever seen pulls air at the front. If the cover is modified then it can also pull from the rear.

Something akin to this
