Every Day
1. Don't get a ticket. 2. Lift an inside wheel. 3. Shoot flames out the exhaust. ![]()

I agree...once warmed up...run it hard. WOT whenever possible. I shift at about 6500...

Once the thermostat has kicked (oil is hot), I drive the engine HARD (and baby the shifts).
Like others have mentioned, mine runs much better after a track day or several hours at 80+ mph.

Sheesh, I think I'm depriving my Carrrera! I do redline (well, maybe bring it to 6200) at least once a day in 1st or 2nd, but I figured I didn't want to push a twenty year old car with 184,000 on the clock and no engine work yet. It's my daily driver and I'll confess I usually cruise at about 29-3300 rpm. Hell, tomarrow I'll just keep in in 2nd the whole way on the freeway to work and report back.

Manual says downshift at 2700 rpm. No excuse ever to be lower than that.
How do I drive mine? As fast as is safe. I make sure it sees the addictive side of 6000 rpm every drive, as often as possible. Damn, I'm frustrated. I wanted to drive my 911 to work today (79 miles of country road each way), but it's frosty here and the UK roads are smothered in salt. I DON'T like to do that to it! Drive safely, have fun.

Most often I place my butt in the left hand seat behind the steering wheel. It's so hard to drive the car from the right hand seat (people in England & Australia may find otherwise).
Then I put the key in the keyhole. Twist it...zokkazokka..grrrouumpphhh....rrrrrrrrrr. Then I release the handbrake..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Well most of the time I drive normally. By that I mean not beat the crap out of the car, but not like a senior citizen either. Any car where you beat the crap out of it daily will need more upkeep that's for sure. Also we mustn't forget that our cars are in fact not new anymore! But of course they're sports cars and need to be driven hard sometimes. ![]() |

How do I drive my Carrera? Well, I drive slow for some maximum 20 km, thereafter I assume the engine has reached operating temperature (or close enough) and within the next 40 km I'll inevitably (at least once) accellerate through all the gears (mostly 2nd and 3rd) as fast as she will go, sometimes till the limiter cuts in. But, generally, I try to stick pretty much to the (speed limits + 35%) (or below) because Belgium has joined the "zero tolerance" club lately and I'm getting used to it (through the medium of 2 recent speeding tickets). But every time I go out with the Porsche, she reaches top guts...
BTW, I'm in the process of installing new sport Bilsteins, new rear rotors, new brake pads and a removable Momo Corse steering wheel, and 2nd of May we're off for a 3800 km trip to Spain...wel intend to drive "legal" through the (in)famous "mer de Sarkosy" (inside frog joke, mer means "sea" and "Sarkosy" is the French minister of the interior (state dept), slapping fines onto anybody that drives too fast; "merde" is something else, AKA "small smelly sausage"), this for all you fine linguist folks... Once inside Spain, I'm looking forward to more spirited, if kindly, driving.

You won't see any carbon smoke cloud from my exhaust. Usually bounce off the rev limiter anytime I drive it.

Hmmm....
I'v only had my 79 SC for 1 month; But last saturday i got pulled over by a Cop on a bike. I was wondering ![]() OUPS' what have i done wrong. OK i left the gas station i 2.gear turning with WOT and almost squeeling tyres, and reached maybe 60mph, the light was shifting to red and i hurried it a little. The cop has been waitng for the red light hes way and saw it all. HE folowed me for a mile, and ppulled mem over. He asked, "who is the owner off the car ?" , ME i replied, "May i see your drivers licence ?", and i gave it to him. He went to talk in his radio for a minute, to check the license plate, and to se if i was the owner. and YES i am. I Later asked himn why he had pulled me over, and yes "The cop actually thought i stole the car". So can you all say "Drive it like you stole it" ![]()

My recent experience with a @#$? squeak (which turned out to be in the seat spring connectors) would have never been an issue if I had kept the revs up. Didn't even notice the @#&% sound until my wife heard it one day when she was driving. It had probably been making that noise for a couple of years

It's hard not to focus on the mechanics, to be sure. The exhaust note above 4000 rpm is heavenly music. After a good flogging, the car runs better, smoother. Etc.
But I should also mention that the car has made me a much better driver. Much more aware of surroundings, particularly the road ahead. Much more aware of The Envelope, both the limits of my car, and other cars as well. It has taught me to keep both hands on the steering wheel. It has taught me to think hard about seating position and support. About weight transfer in various circumstances and varied braking capabilities as a result. Tire design and formulation. I discourage people from trying to drive the car. They commonly assume that, because of the expense and engineering and reputation of the car, it must have been designed to be easy to drive. Not at all so. The opposite is true. The only vehicle that competes with it in this regard, the only vehicle that is nearly as engaging to operate, is a motorcycle.

This thread has now officially depressed me. Its been four months since I've fired my baby up. Given the weather and the salt on the roads, it'll probably be at least another three weeks.

Speaking of tickets and speed limits....
Did anyone in Arizona hear the news that "they" are thinking of upping the speed limit on some of the interstates from 75mph to 80 mph? Sorry to hijack the thread

I always tell people that driving the 911 is a full body experience. The seating position, suspension, lack power steering, etc. makes it like a full body workout. I have only been an owner for a short time and haven't flogged it like some of you all, but I'm beginning to learn to open it up. I'm still not used to such high RPMs. ![]()
