For me it's the pure sports car experience. It's devoid of any creature comforts or distractions that seduce your senses into mediocrity. My radio is permanently tuned to 7200 MFI. My sightlines are clear and focused, only occasionally diverted to the large and prominent gauges. I breathe in the oil drenched cabin air, lubricating my foggy thoughts to a fine focus. The feeling of the road through the steering resonates in my joints, immediately sensing changes in surface and grip. The cars instant responses are light and agile. I am becoming a symphony of senses that I have been unable to replicate in other cars. When I go for a drive in my early 911, it is to me, the pure sports car experience.

Because...when you have a low mileage original paint 2.4 911S, you have sincere doubts that Porsche has made a better street car since...

i have an S , and wouldn't call it a street car either.. it wears me out to drive city traffic or traffic jams..
half an hour of it , and my left pinky toe goes numb , really numb as in wack it with a hammer and i don't feel a thing numb...

it's hard work, and i love it... i just don't like it in day to day traffic.

I brought home a nasty POS '71 911S and took a week to get it started and a month to halfway sort it out. It now runs well enough that it has been on one Malibu run with the boys. But it's looks will frighten the weak and collect the disdain of others, especially the ones that keep a can of wax and a CA Duster in the trunk. It'll get better.

So, I let a friend drive it a couple of times who has owned a '72 911T Sporto for 10 years. He sold the Sporto after the 2nd drive. That's gotta tell you something.

Tabs, I thought you promised to stay over in the OT corral.

i'll ditto svandamme on that! spend the day in my car? you know it by the end of the day.

some of my thoughts:

computers??we don't need no stinking computers!

Does your car still have MFI? "yes"
Do you understand how it works? "no clue"

"Can you turn on the A/C?" "Uh it doesn't have any"...
"Oh"

Conversation at the gas pump: " Is that a real "S" ?
"yes"
"That car is a legend"

Conversation at a party, Boxster owners wife says: "You have a Porsche too?"
husband says: " Honey our car wears panties next his car"

It's the little bonuses like that too.

Got a sport on it that a friend of Tryson's (Hans in the Willow Springs thread) fabbed up out of a stocker. It in itself does cover for some of the other shortcomings An early car is a hot rod. So, I'm hot rodding it, think sort of 911R. Nothing against the SCWDP or the GruppeB, I was almost there.

Sure, the early cars that have been down the road many times are not like a newer car They lack all the creature comforts and I sure don't have A/C . But, I'm happy I have what I have. That's what this thread is about.

With the exception of BB2 and a few other cars most of them early model 911s are too skinny for my tastes.

Its like comparing kate moss with the women in those vargas posters.

Cool

Okay, Okay,

Here's my brief story.

I owned in succession:
A 1972 911T Targa. A very sweet car!
A 1976 911S Targa A very fast car. First one with blackout trim.
A 1977 911S Targa Polar white with blackout trim. A beautiful car!
A 1977 930 Sunroof Coupe. Talbot Yellow with a Tobacco interior. (I still own it)

Then I bought a 1970 911E. It needed some TLC. This was in 1982 when they were not a popular car. I worked over the cam timing a little and put a front pan it it. The pan came out beautifully. I had the fuel pump rebuilt by Gus at Pacific Fuel Injection. I put 911T front torsion bars in it. I modified the gas charged front struts to hold Koni shocks. I used motorcycle bellows on top of the struts. I installed front and rear stock sway bars on it. I put Koni shocks on the rear and installed a set of Phoenix 14" tires on it. 14" wheels were stock on the car. I worked over the shift bushings, pedel bushings and put a 9volt Radio Shack relay in the rear electric panel for the fuel injection start. (Secret modification for old cars)(There can be a lot of voltage drop in old wiring on old cars. The std bosch relay needs 10.5 volts to operate and often won't work in the old cars starting circuit)

To this day, from the feelings I get from this car, when driving it, I would have never owned the first 4 Porsches that I bought with my hard earned money! I have never had the satisfaction from any Porsches that I have driven that I have recieved from this automobile. I am ashamed to say I haven't driven it lately, but that will change!

This is a feeling that you can not get with any other car.

David Duffield

I was taking a break. I'd been behind a group of four motorcycles who apparently found it inconceivable that they were holding a four-wheeler up. I finally decided to stop for a few minutes, take some pictures, and let them finish their little 'speed run.'
