Price check aisle 4
After my car got totaled in a rear end hit in January, I was Porsche-less. I am now back on my game and have my eye on a '96 993.
Specs: - Miles: 54K - Color: Oak Green metallic (factory special order) - 2nd owner; had since 1998 - Euro Spring package - Owner says 9 of 10 for interior and exterior - no accidents, paint work, etc - carfax is clean - dealer maintained - Out of state purchase - asking $37 - Owner PCA member Questions: - what is fair price (lets assume seller is honest) - what is PPI etiquette for out of state purchase Thanks in advance for help. Can't tell you how excited I am to be looking for a new porsche. Chris

I think the Rennlist board has a pretty accurate gauge for these cars. The price seems on the upper range, then again b/c of the (fairly) low miles, assuming it's been in good hands, it may be right on the money, especially if you are happy with the color/options/upgrades. I think the average seems to run in the mid 30's. Depending on the PPI, you could ask for an adjustment. If you are serious and the seller sees that, he can even do the PPI for you, but make sure you talk to the shop before hand. Let them know what's up and try to have them contact you directly so there's no communication "interference."
I'd love to know what that color looks like. Got any visual props?

I'm normally against metallics but that one looks great. I've seen a similar color, nonmetallic, on a 993 Turbo. It was so dark that at certain times it just looked black. This one is pretty unique too.

Oak Green was a factory color way back in 1976! What goes around comes around. Very pretty.

I've been looking at 993s lately and 32-38K seems to be the going rate on 95 and 96 C2 coupes. The biggest reason for fluctuating price seems to be mileage and the nature of the seller (dealers are higher). The two biggest things that I would look for would be whether or not the rear main seal issues are occuring or have been delt with and if the secondary air injection problem has reared its ugly head. That color, by the way, is amazing.

JP911,
Can you please expand on the "rear main seal issues" and the "secondary air injection problem" you mentioned above.

One of the problems on the 993s (not all cars, but apparently quite a few) is that the secondary air injectors can become clogged (with carbon I believe) causing a check engine light. The fix for this can run in the neighborhood of $3-4K depending on who does the work. I don't know too much about why the rear main seal fails, but it results in an oil leak and requires tearing down the engine to replace. From what I've read, there are some cases where these problems were addressed under warranty. You may want to do a search here and on the rennlist board to learn more.

Beautiful car, if I had the means & the PPI checks out, I would pull the trigger.

As pretty as that car is, I think the color will not be to the liking of a lot of buyers thus lowering the car's resale value. I don't think you can compare the price of say a black or silver 993 to the price of an uncommon colored car.

and howza about judy's blue 993 jellybean? which was in the forty year display at RR2, and my thoughts were the wider the color field in that display the better. 40 years of black and silver? boring....I like the odd colors. loosen your tie! ofcouse my cars are currently black, grey, tan, and blue, all non metallic and well, kinda drab. The green is great, pull the trigger, no time for regrets when it's all over , its over, LIVE! oh yeah, free or die...

If you like it, haggle with the guy and buy it. I think it looks great.
I get positive comments on my Forest Green Metallic 911 all the time.

That said, I don't think you can use "what (more common colored) 993's are going for" as a basis for price comparison. -Chris

The low production odd color should command a premium. In the artists eye its wunderbar! in the bankers? rhymes with wankers... they wear ties for "expression"!
