Under Dash Speaker System
Has anyone installed one of these systems? Does the setup look factory? How good are the speakers? It looks like the ones w/o speakers are molded differently. It looks like you have to cut your own holes.

They are pretty low-fi - might be ok as fill. I tossed out the one the PO put in my car. It's a bad place for speakers.

I am getting the rear decklid shelf inside reupolstered and I took out the speakers that the previous owner had mounted. Where else can I mount some speakers. I don't want to drill into the door panels.
Any ideas? Zac

down-firing drivers would only be suitable for low/sub frequency drivers. An option would be to combine those with small mid/hi drivers attached to the door frame below the edge of the dash. I paired some angled surface mount tweeters there with mids in the doors; there's probably enough room for a box that will hold 4" combos. The boxes tuck right up to the bottom edge of the dash and I never kneecapped myself on them.

I got a good deal on one of those on eBay for my targa. Not sure if the speakers in them made much of a difference, but it sure cleaned up the underside of the dash nicely. The fit is pretty good, but I had to drive a self-tap sheet screw through the drivers side to keep it all in place. Overall a nice upgrade.

"Where else can I mount some speakers"
The 911 is not designed for audio (except for engine audio) and you are gonna have problems. Take a look at putting tweeters or small (high-freq) mids in the rear "shoulder" area on each side. Never seen it done but I think a short throw speaker ought to be found that works in the rear package shelf -- I suppose you could always get some of the small Magneplanars for that area.... |

You can get decent hi's from a 2 piece door mount setup

my solution was these speakers
http://www.cartoys.com/cartoys/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Product_ID=1206&pid=ov&OVRAW=pioneer%20ts%20x150&OVKEY=pioneer%20ts%20x150&OVMTC=standard straped in using the luggage strap loops at the base of the rear seats. maybe not the prettiest, but no holes anywhere. sound is ok and price was good. I eventually also put speakers in the doors in the same place bill did, right where there is a speaker hole in the metal. jason ![]() |
