3.6 Conversion Part 1

Well the engine came in today and it is pretty dry and somewhat clean. The only thing that I am a little disappointed in is that
on top of the fan housing the rubber boot that hooks to the
heater fan blower has a big hole in it and one of the oil return
tubes on the engine is crushed a bit not blocked just crushed
a little. I wonder if they make a two piece oil return like on the
older cars. On Saturday I am going to start pulling things
off of it that I wont be needing.

Let the conversion begin!!








Does anyone need a set of 993 mufflers?



Is this a stock airbox or motor sound?



Tranny is cleaned and painted ready to go back in..

That is a motorsound airbox. You can buy two piece oil return tubes so it should not be a problem.

I didn't think that it looked like a stock airbox. Guess I got lucky
and got a small freebie. I am glad they make collapsable tubes
for these too. Now what to do with this large AC bracket?

I think the tubes are actually the same part as the early cars. You can cut the AC bracket down. I have seen some were they only left the part that acts as a spacer between motor and engine blade and simply cut off the upper part.

The whole top of the fan is onluy a ~$20 item you will pant a 964 one anyway if you are planning on using one of Thom's heat tubes.

There are 2 different rear engine mounts one has the AC extension the other doesn't. You can buy one w/o the AC pedestal for ~$150 or just cut the top off the AC one. If you cut plan on a little time w/ a grinder to clean it up, it will look just like the other one.

You will need to cut a piece out of the top of the stock air cleaner cover anyway if you plan on using it.

I have pulled several items off and got it cleaned up. Now
for some questions for you 3.6 conversion guru's....

Do I really need this thing in pic with arrows pointing to
it (excuse primitive drawing)
If so what is it as it attaches to the air box

What are these hoses and where do they attach?



Did I plug the right vacuum line?

My clutch and flywheel should be here this week followed by
the timmins wiring harness. I already have the factory 993
harness mounted in car ready to go. I need to mount the
DME and I will be set. Few more things I need to get ready
before the install...

Locate or fabricate some thing for the oil line from
right side 993 engine to SC S hose to oil tank

Fuel lines with filter setup

Throttle cable setup

Bend and weld brace onto stock 993 engine mouting bar

and a bunch of unknowns

Any help hints would be appreciated guys... thanks in advance

The right arrow in that picture points to the brake booster vacuum line. I didn't look to see what year your car is, but if you have power brakes, hook up the line there.

Where did you get your engine? 3.2s and 3.6s seem to be getting scarce and expensive out here in SoCal. BTW I'm looking for one.... Anyone? Bueller?

My car is non power brake boosted so

I am going the route without the kit..

I was able to find a brand new harness that someone had
never installed for a lot less $$$$

I just need a few more nic nacs and a lot of advice from
people that have done this 993 non vario conversion. I need
to know what pins are swapped on the engine plug?
Not sure if they are the same ones as on the 964 engine
or not...

The one with lots of arrows is the secondary air injection pump. Air pump that runs when you first start up for a minute or two forcing air into the exhaust. I am leaving mine in till I pass smog then it will probably come off for weight savings. You can probably do without it. Just find caps for it. A gearbox drain plug works if you take the checkvalve out of the junction . The two lines are the one with the white connector is the one for a brake booster. The line above it on that bracket is the one for the fuel charcoal canister.

the first pic w/ arrows is the Secondary air injection pump. It only functions for a few seconds on cold start to pump extra air into the exhaust. It is not needed(euro versions do not have it). It will throw a code if it is removed, but unless the car is smogged who cares. The external air lines connect to passages in the heads which terminate in the exhaust ports.


In the second pic the lines from the top are

I am putting this engine in a carrera 3.0 which originally
had a charcoal canister. Do I need to rehook this canister
back up with the 3.6 or ?

I have heard of some people talk about a vent to the fuel
tank that needs to be hooked up does this have anything to
do with the charcoal canister?

I am just going to plug the lines for the brake booster as
my car does not have the booster. I might add one
later or somthing but for now I am going to plug it..

Ok I removed the air injection and just need to plug
holes in block now. Looks much better


Do I really need all these small vacuum lines?
What about the vacuum canister to the left?
It appears that the vacuum lines go to the actuator
on back that is some type of flapper?

Yes; the flapper opens the 'resonance valve' at ~5150RPM; good for ~12hp.

Hey Thom, I got one of those carbon fiber heater tubes from Dr. Timmins. I love it. It frees up a ton of space back there so I can more easily fix more things that ain't broke.

Congrats Warpspd! Did you remove the A/C? If so, where does theA/C bracket mount?

Yes I did remove the A/C system on it. I used the mount but
cut the top part of it off so it would be clean install. I will take
pics of the modified bracket before and after. The front pic
of the fan shows the bracket sitting with lower pulley on it.
